Course summary

Chemistry, often referred to as the “central science,” helps us develop a deep understanding of the world around us. Technological advances have transformed the way chemistry is carried out, with computational methods playing an increasingly important role in both scientific research and the chemical industry.

Our Chemistry with Computing degree provides a strong foundation in chemistry while also teaching how modern techniques in computational chemistry and data analysis can be used real-world chemical challenges such as materials design, silico drug development and the analysis of large datasets, equipping you with valuable skills.

During the course, you will study organic, inorganic, physical and analytical chemistry while developing strong practical lab skills using our state-of-the-art STEMLab facilities. In addition, you will learn computer programming and explore modern computer-assisted techniques used in contemporary chemical research, supported by our high-quality computer labs.

You will be taught by leading experts from Loughborough’s highly respected departments of Chemistry and Computer Science, many of whom are engaged in research with far-reaching impact. You will also benefit from strong pastoral support and a peer-mentoring scheme.

Dr Felix Plasser provides an introduction to the course

What's the difference between MChem and BSc?

Both the Chemistry with Computing BSc (Hons) degree and the Chemistry with Computing MChem (Hons) degree are orientated towards the practice of chemistry in the world outside the University. Our BSc course equips you for employment in chemistry, scientific and other sectors. The MChem course prepares you for pursuing a PhD or for a career in industrial research.

Chemistry with Computing BSc

Chemical Engineering or Chemistry

Loughborough University offers undergraduate degrees in Chemical Engineering or Chemistry.

What's the difference, and which one should you study?

Modules

Course Modules

For a full list of areas studied, see the 'What You'll Study' section of the course page on our website.

Assessment method

You are assessed by examination and coursework. Depending on the module, coursework may include written laboratory reports, oral presentations, poster presentations, research papers, peer review and a dissertation.

MChem students must obtain an average of 55% or above in Years 2 and 3 to progress to the next year of the course. Your MChem degree classification will be determined by the weighted average of your marks obtained in years 2, 3 and 4 in the ratio 20:40:40.

Contextual admissions

Universities and colleges consider more than grades when assessing applications and may make offers based on a range of criteria. Learn more about contextual offers.

We consider contextual information as part of the assessment of an application to provide us with further insight into your achievements. This may lead to reduced offers, up to two grades lower than the typical offer requirements, as well as additional consideration when your results are received. Tuition fee status depends on a number of criteria and varies according to where in the UK you will study. For further guidance on the criteria for home or overseas tuition fees, please refer to the UKCISA website.

Additional fee information

The fees stated above are for the 2027/28 academic year; international fees are still to be approved. We will update this information as soon as it is available. Fees are reviewed annually and are likely to increase to take into account inflationary pressures.

While the cost of your tuition covers lots of things, it doesn’t cover everything. For instance this course doesn’t cover the cost of any stationery, printing, books or re-assessments which you might need.

UK tuition fees align with the applicable fee caps set by the UK government, and as such they are subject to changes made to the agreed cap in a specific year.
