Course summary

Our BSc Criminology and Sociology degree combines two dynamic subjects. Together, they offer a detailed understanding of crime, its causes and prevention alongside a broader understanding of how societies and individual lives are changing because of rapid changes in the social, cultural and political fabric of society.

Studying these complementary disciplines places our students at the centre of contemporary debates about discrimination, inequality, disorder and justice and equips them with the knowledge, skills and passion to confidently critique current policies and propose novel solutions.

The degree brings together core and advanced modules in criminology and sociology. This ensures a unique ability to understand crime as well as broader underpinning societal processes and key issues including racism, changing gender roles, shifts in economy, consumption, leisure and intimate relations.

The course will teach you to analyse the social world, its composition and the forces that change it, and to apply these skills to understand the most pressing current social issues relating to key topical areas such youth offending, gender violence, race and racism, social class inequality and social mobility.

This Criminology and Sociology BSc (Hons) degree is an ideal course for those who have an interest in social justice and social issues and wish to study a diverse range of topics relating to the challenges and opportunities faced by modern societies. The insights and skills developed during the degree will prepare you for a wide variety of professional careers in the criminal justice system and a broad array of jobs in the public, private and voluntary sectors.

You will be assessed using a range of methods. These include essays and exams, in-class tests and group presentations, blogs and critical case studies as well as a final year dissertation which evaluates your research and writing skills.
