Course summary

Course Summary
The Electronic Engineering BEng (Foundation Year) at Middlesex University is specifically designed for students who may not meet the direct entry requirements for the full degree but are eager to pursue a career in electronic engineering. This foundation year provides a solid grounding in the core principles of engineering, mathematics, and physics, preparing you for progression to the full BEng degree in Electronic Engineering. During this year, you will build the necessary academic and practical skills required to successfully undertake the more advanced topics covered in the following years of the degree. The foundation year serves as a bridge, helping you gain the confidence and technical knowledge to excel in your engineering studies.

Why Study This Course at Middlesex University?
Middlesex University offers a supportive and dynamic learning environment, tailored to help you succeed even if you are coming from a non-technical background. The foundation year provides an opportunity to strengthen your understanding of fundamental engineering concepts before progressing to more complex topics. Our close ties with industry partners, including Siemens, Festo, and Cisco, ensure that you have access to the latest tools, technologies, and professional expertise.

Our dedicated academic support, including regular feedback and guidance from experienced tutors, ensures you are well-prepared for the full degree. The collaborative learning environment fosters creativity and encourages innovative thinking, helping you develop both the technical and problem-solving skills required in electronic engineering. The foundation year also sets the stage for your progression onto the full degree, which includes industry placements and opportunities for research projects with global partners like the London Digital Twin Research Centre.

What Will You Gain?
By completing the foundation year, you will develop a solid understanding of the core subjects needed for the full degree, including engineering principles, basic mathematics, and an introduction to electronics. You will also gain the study skills and academic confidence necessary for success in the BEng degree. This year will help you build a strong foundation in the key areas of mathematics, physics, and basic engineering, preparing you for more advanced study in later years.

You will also develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and practical skills through hands-on workshops and projects, which are designed to replicate real-world engineering challenges. These skills will be invaluable as you progress through the full degree, and you will be well-equipped to take on more complex topics in electronics and systems design.

The foundation year also offers you the opportunity to connect with industry professionals, take part in relevant industry activities, and begin building the professional skills needed to succeed in your future engineering career. By the end of the foundation year, you will be ready to transition smoothly into the full BEng course, with the confidence to tackle more advanced content and a clearer understanding of your future career direction.
