Our PhD/MPhil Gastroenterology programme enables you to undertake a research project that will improve understanding of Gastroenterology.
Gastroenterology is the study of disorders of the digestive system. Gastrointestinal and liver diseases are common, and have a major impact on health and wellbeing across the life course.
Gastroenterology research at The University of Manchester extends from understanding basic gut physiology and the mechanisms of disease, through to investigation and treatment.
Our work spans the spectrum from cellular and molecular studies, animal models of disease and whole human physiology to clinical studies and trials, and health service research.
Examples of current research activities include:
neurogastroenterology and the brain-gut axis
inflammatory bowel disease
liver disease
irritable bowel syndrome and other functional disorders
clinical nutrition and intestinal failure
gastrointestinal surgery
Barrett's oesophagus and oesophageal cancer
mucosal immunology
the gut microbiota
gut endocrinology
appetite and satiety in health and disease
