Course summary

The financial world relies on mathematics and expertise in analytical thinking and problem solving. This course is designed for students who want to:

  • understand more about how the stock markets work

  • learn the principles of business and finance

  • learn about insurance and risk

This accredited course enables you to study mathematics whilst learning key financial principles. The course is run jointly with Nottingham University Business School. Approximately 75% of the teaching is mathematics; the remainder includes finance and business economics modules.

Our research feeds into our teaching. This means we can offer an extensive choice of core and optional modules. The compulsory group project module in the third year gives you the chance to work on specific projects tackled through workshops and student-led group activities.

About mathematics at the University of Nottingham
You will study core first-year mathematics modules in topics such as calculus, probability and statistics. This will develop your skills in problem solving and analytical thinking. The year will include an introduction to business and finance, including accounting and insurance.

As you progress to later years of your degree, you will have more flexibility to choose topics from optional modules. In mathematics, you can explore advanced topics in mathematical finance and modelling, whilst developing expertise in finance and risk management in the Business School.

In your final year, you do a compulsory mathematics group project. This gives you the chance to work collaboratively on a substantial financial mathematics problem. You'll be supervised by expert teaching staff. This is an excellent opportunity to develop your report-writing and team-working skills.

Careers and employability
These transferable skills will help in your career planning. Many of our graduates work in roles including corporate finance, international trade and education.

UCAS Tariff - Not accepted

A level - A*AA - AAA

A Level Mathematics is essential. A Level Further Mathematics (in additional to A Level Mathematics) is preferred but not required. Typical offer conditions - depending on subjects presented - are: - A*AA or A*A*B including A* Maths - AAA including Maths and Further Maths - A*AB including A*A from Maths and Further Maths - A*A*C including A*A* in Maths and Further Maths - AAA or A*AB including A in Maths, plus A in AS Level Further Maths The following A Levels are not accepted: General Studies, Critical Thinking, Citizenship Studies, Thinking Skills, Global Perspectives and Research.

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (first teaching from September 2016) - D*DD

This qualification is accepted alongside A Level Mathematics grade A*.

Access to HE Diploma - D: 42 credits M: 3 credits

This qualification is accepted alongside A Level Mathematics grade A*.

Scottish Higher - AAAAB

This qualification is accepted when combined with Scottish Advanced Higher grades AA, including Advanced Higher Mathematics.

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Diploma (first teaching from September 2016) - DD

This qualification is accepted alongside A Level Mathematics grade A*.

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate (first teaching from September 2016) - D

This qualification is accepted alongside A Level grades A*A (including A* Mathematics) or AA (including Maths and Further Maths)

Scottish Advanced Higher - AA

Advanced Higher Mathematics grade A is required. This qualification is accepted when combined with Scottish Higher grades AAAAB.

International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme - 34 points

IB Diploma 34 points including Higher Level Mathematics Analysis and Approaches (A&A) grade 6. Alternatively, achieve 3 Higher Level Certificates with grades: - 6,6,6 including HL6 Maths A&A - 7,6,5 including HL6 Maths A&A - 7,7,5 including HL7 Maths A&A

WJEC Level 3 Advanced Skills Baccalaureate Wales - A - C

This qualification is accepted as equivalent to a non-mathematics A Level.

Cambridge International Pre-U Certificate - Principal

D2 D3 M1 with grade D2 Mathematics D3 D3 M2 with grade D3 Mathematics and D3 Further Mathematics

GCSE/National 4/National 5

English 4/C.

Lower offers will not be made based on STEP/MAT/TMUA tests, although these may be considered in the admissions process.
