Our BA in English Language and Linguistics at Swansea University offers a dynamic and comprehensive exploration of how language works, how it’s used, and how it shapes our social and cultural worlds. This degree equips you with the analytical tools to investigate the structure of English, from its sounds and grammar, to the meanings it conveys across genres, registers, and real-world contexts.

You’ll learn how language is acquired, taught, and used in everyday life, with a strong emphasis on the social, cultural, and ethical dimensions of communication. The programme also addresses the responsible and effective use of emerging technologies, including AI, in language related fields.

Through the study of authentic texts and discourse, students develop an understanding of how linguistic choices reflect and influence meaning. Graduates will emerge with strong communication, research and analytical skills, preparing you for careers in education, publishing, media, language technology, and beyond.

Modules

In Year 0, you will typically study areas including: Academic Writing and Skills Development; Introduction to Being Human; Introduction to Research; Critical Reflection and Problem Solving; Research Essay; Social Science.

In Year 1, you will typically study areas including: A History of the English Language; The Sound system of English; Mythbusters: Beliefs and Truths About Language; Grammar and Meaning; Language Teaching Methodology; Language in Mind.

In Year 2, you will typically study areas including: Research Methods and Tools for Applied Linguistics; Discourse Analysis; Who Owns Language? Policy, Planning and Social Impact; Psycholinguistics of Bilingualism; Child Language and Literacy.

In Year 3, you will typically study areas including: Second Language Acquisition; Language Technologies and AI; Applied Linguistics Dissertation; Media Linguistics; Working with Practitioners (Health, Law, Education, Technology).

For applicants whose first language is not English we require a minimum overall IELTS score of 6.0 (or equivalent) and no less than 5.5 in each component.
