Course summary

By promoting individual strengths, mental wellbeing and independence, Mental Health Nurses support people who are finding it difficult to cope with aspects of their life due to mental health problems.

This course focuses on contemporary approaches in the support and treatment available for people with mental health problems. You will undertake practice learning experience for 50% of the course in a broad range of placements within NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. These include NHS community and hospital placements as well as independent and voluntary sector experience.

During these practice learning experiences, you will be involved in mental health nursing activities, including assessment and the provision of care for a range of patients relevant to their chosen nursing pathway. There are opportunities for international placements or experiences at various points in the course.

Your career
On successful completion of the course, you will be eligible for registration as a Registered Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC). The course prepares you to become an effective, recovery focused Mental Health Nurses able to work in a range of settings.

These include hospitals, day services, people's homes, addiction services, eating disorders services, forensic services, services for older adults with mental health problems, including dementia, and Child and Adolescent Mental Health services (CAMHs). There are also opportunities in private sector mental health services.

Standard Qualification requirements

A level - BCC

preferably including a science subject, and GCSE English, Maths and a Science subject at C/4

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (first teaching from September 2016) - DMM

Applied Science, Biological/Biomedical Science or Health Care related at DMM and GCSE English, Maths and a Science subject at C/4

Access to HE Diploma - D: 9 credits M: 33 credits P: 3 credits

Access to HE Diploma with minimum of 60 credits with 45 at level 3 Access to HE Diploma in Health or Care – Requires GCSE Maths, Science and English C/4 if not included in Access Diploma

Scottish Higher - BBBC

to include Higher English or Essay based subject plus Nat 5 Maths or Application of Maths or SCQF Level 5 Numeracy and one science subject at C or above

International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme - 28 points

IB Diploma of 28 with specific scores of SL 4 in a science subject and Maths and English A at SL or HL at Grade 5 or English B at SL Grade 6 or HL at Grade 5

Leaving Certificate - Higher Level (Ireland) (first awarded in 2017) - H2, H3, H3, H3

including Higher Level English or Essay based subject plus Ordinary Level Maths and a Science at minimum O3/O4

Foundation Apprenticeship (SCQF Level 6) - Pass

Accepted as equivalent to one Higher at grade B as part of the overall grade profile of Highers required for entry. Any essential subjects at Higher should still be achieved in addition to the Foundation Apprenticeship.

T Level - M

Health and Science: Science  Health and Science: Healthcare Science  Health and Science: Health  Education and Childcare  plus GCSE English, Maths and a Science at C/4

Applicants are expected to have evidence of assessed study (not work based) within the last 5 years.
A reference which should be relevant within the past 9 months.
Minimum Age: Must be 17 by the start of their first clinical placement (January after Programme starts)
