Course summary

Learn how economies, markets and institutions work. Shape your degree through our pathways: Economics, Finance or Data and Econometrics.

Develop strong analytical, quantitative and problem-solving skills and learn how to apply them to real world issues, like inflation, inequality, global markets, sustainability and financial decision making.

Our graduates can understand and respond to the major economic and financial issues shaping the world today. They are suited to a range of professional roles including policy, finance, consultancy, business analysis, data or postgraduate study.

In first year, build foundations in economics and develop quantitative and employability skills. Optional modules give an understanding of markets, financial decision making and the wider economics environment that firms and governments operate in.

As you progress to second year, continue to follow a pathway through more optional modules. Pathways will begin to move you further towards applied, finance or technical and data focused study.

In final year, study advanced economics and learn how to apply what you have studied to contemporary issues and specialist areas of interest. Optional modules are supported by in-house academic research, allowing you to engage with ideas shaping modern economics and policy.

During your time with us, you can apply to spend a Year in Industry. Placements are taken in third year, returning to campus after placement to complete final year. Students who apply for the standard three-year programme can swap to the Year in Industry programme once they arrive on campus in September.

This programme is available with either a Year in China or a Year Abroad. The Year in China offers undergraduate students the opportunity to spend one year at our joint venture, Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU). You can choose either the China Studies Track, where you will take courses from the China Studies Degree, the Creative Track, or the Entrepreneurship Track . XJTLU is a fully English-speaking university, located in Suzhou. The Year Abroad offers students the opportunity to spend a full academic year studying at one of our partner universities around the world, following a mixture of culture and/or discipline-related modules. If you wish to study this programme with a Year in China or a Year Abroad you will have the opportunity to apply after you arrive at Liverpool.

Modules

Students on both pathways are given rigorous grounding in both microeconomic and macroeconomic theory and econometric theory during the first two years of study. Students following the generalist pathway have an opportunity in the first year to take business-related modules offered by the School, whilst those on the finance pathway take introductory modules in accounting and finance. In the second year, finance students continue their specialist studies with modules in financial management and securities markets, whilst students on the generalist pathway can select modules from a range of economics areas. In the final year, students are able to select from a greater range of optional modules so that they can specialise in the areas of economics and finance that are of the greatest interest to them and their future aspirations.

Applicants who offer the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) and meet our offer criteria will be made the standard offer, plus an alternative offer. This will be at one A Level grade lower plus a grade A in the EPQ, for example the offer would be AAB including Mathematics grade A or ABB including Mathematics grade A plus A in the EPQ.

If this is your first degree and you are a Home student applying for entry in 2026, you do not have to pay your fees upfront. Instead, you can take out a tuition fee loan which is paid straight to the University. This is available to most students, no matter what their household income.
