Course summary

This integrated programme is designed to prepare and support you for a strong and rewarding experience in software and AI engineering from the moment you enrol. If you have a passion for technology, you will learn to create and innovate through software development and intelligent systems, and develop the skills to address challenges in an increasingly connected and AI-driven world.

In the first year, you will build a strong foundation in the core principles that underpin computing and engineering. You will develop essential knowledge in areas such as programming, mathematics and problem-solving, alongside key academic and professional skills including communication, teamwork and independent learning. This provides a supportive transition into degree-level study and prepares you for the learning approaches used throughout the programme.

As you progress, you will develop your understanding of software engineering alongside artificial intelligence, learning how to design, build and maintain modern, AI-enabled systems. You will explore areas such as system design, data-driven applications and cloud-based technologies, gaining the skills needed to develop scalable and reliable solutions.

In your final year, you will focus on more advanced and applied topics, including AI engineering and cloud-based development, alongside a major individual project. This allows you to apply your knowledge to real-world problems and develop solutions that reflect current industry practices.

Assessment method

You will learn through a combination of lectures, tutorials, workshops and practical laboratory sessions, where you will develop both theoretical understanding and hands-on technical skills. There is a strong emphasis on applying your learning to real-world problems through programming tasks, system design activities and project work.

In the foundation year, teaching is designed to support your transition into university study. You will build confidence in core areas such as programming, mathematics and problem-solving, while developing your academic skills and approach to learning. You will also begin to explore how computing and AI concepts are applied in practice.

As you progress through the programme, you will focus on developing your skills in software engineering and artificial intelligence. You will learn how to design, implement and evaluate complex systems, including AI-enabled applications, and gain experience working with data-driven and cloud-based technologies.

In your final year, you will undertake a substantial individual project, allowing you to apply your knowledge to a real-world problem. This provides an opportunity to demonstrate your technical, analytical and problem-solving skills, and to develop solutions that reflect current industry practice.

Assessment varies by module and may include coursework, programming assignments, technical reports, presentations and examinations. You will receive feedback to support your development, with assessments becoming more independent and applied as you progress.
