Spanish was formally added to the University of Edinburgh's curriculum in 1919. Since then, we have developed into a large teaching and research community - one of the best-established subject areas of our kind in the UK.
Today, Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American studies at Edinburgh offers a unique research environment that brings together cutting-edge expertise in Iberian and Latin American cultures with a strong cross-field focus on:
literary studies
visual cultures
language and society
We specialise in the major areas of literary and cultural studies, and film and visual culture, from:
Spain, with a particular focus on Catalonia and the Basque Country
Latin America, including Mexico, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Colombia, Argentina, Chile, and other countries in the region
Portugal, Brazil and Lusophone Africa
We foster innovative postgraduate work that bridges linguistic and academic boundaries.
Over the course of your PhD, you will complete an original body of work under the expert guidance of at least two supervisors. Your thesis will be around 80,000 words.
Our programme includes access to skills training, including research methodologies specific to Spanish, Portuguese and Latin American Studies. Our research collections, resources and facilities are outstanding.
