Summary:

Be there for life’s most important moments. On this Midwifery degree, you will develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to support women and families through pregnancy, birth and beyond.

Midwifery is where science meets compassion. You will explore the physical, psychological and social aspects of care, learning how to support both straightforward and complex pregnancies while making a real difference to people’s lives.

At Southampton, ranked 3rd in the UK for Midwifery as per Guardian rankings 2026, your learning is grounded in research and real clinical experience, preparing you for a rewarding career in healthcare.

• Qualify with both a Midwifery degree and the Newborn and Infant Physical Examination (NIPE) qualification, enhancing your clinical expertise and employability

Student support:

From day one, you will be supported on campus and in practice by a network of academic staff, including your Personal Academic Tutor and senior tutors.

You will also be part of a supportive student community, with opportunities to reflect on your experiences through initiatives such as Schwartz Rounds.

This course is approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Council, and on graduation you will be eligible to register as a midwife.

The NHS Learning Support Fund may be available to support your studies. If you are a UK applicant, you may be eligible for £5,000 per academic year, depending on your circumstances.

Modules

Throughout this degree, you will take a ‘whole person’ approach. Your clinical practice will be enriched by the understanding of the social and psychological aspects of childbirth. You will learn about the midwife’s role in public health and develop leadership and critical thinking skills.

Year 1: Understand the biological, psychological and sociological processes of pregnancy and birth.

Year 2: Learn how to identify and manage pregnancy, labour and birth for women with complex health needs and develop skills to manage obstetric and neonatal emergencies. You will also commence a research project of your choice and build on your understanding of the importance of evidence-based practice.

Years 3: You will explore the wider context of professional practice, expanding knowledge around ethics, governance, leadership and innovation. You will complete your research project and prepare for qualification.

Assessment method

Assessments range from essays and exams to projects. These take place throughout the course to ensure that you are reaching the right levels of attainment. Your practical skills will be assessed whist you are on placement and recorded by your practice mentor.

Scottish Higher

We normally consider applicants who offer at least 1 Advanced Higher. Applicants presenting with only Highers will be considered on a case by case basis. Where Highers are taken over two years it might be expected that higher grades are achieved, particularly in any specific subjects required. For example, S5 – S6 (2 years): AABBB (A in specific subject) or S6 (1 year): ABBBB (A in specific subject).

Unless a more advanced level (Higher or Advanced Higher) is specified in the stated entry requirements, all applicants will be required to have achieved a pass in Mathematics and English at Standard Grade, Grade 3 or National 5, Grade C, the equivalent of GCSE Grade C/ Grade 4.

International Baccalaureate Career-related Programme (IBCP):
The University of Southampton accepts the IBCP for entry to their degree programmes, recognising the value of combining academic skills with practical skills, providing a solid preparation for university level work. Offers will be made on the individual components of the IBCP. Applicants not taking the full IBCP but presenting with a combination of a Level 3 vocational qualification and IB Certificates may still be considered.

Offers will be made on the individual Diploma Course subject(s) and the career-related study qualification. The CP core will not form part of the offer. Where there is a subject pre-requisite(s), applicants will be required to study the subject(s) at Higher Level in the Diploma course subject and/or take a specified unit in the career-related study qualification. Applicants may also be asked to achieve a specific grade in those elements.

Applicants must hold GCSE English language (or GCSE English) (minimum grade 4/C) and mathematics (minimum grade 4/C) and Science (minimum grade 4/C) if not offered at a level 3 qualification.

You may be required to attend a selection day. Satisfactory Occupational Health and Police Checks will be required.
