Course summary
The Veterinary Gateway programme is a targeted Widening Participation initiative aimed at students who want to study veterinary medicine but who might not otherwise meet our entry requirements. This is a six-year course that integrates a preparatory 'Gateway' year designed to equip you with the knowledge and skills you need to study veterinary medicine. Successful completion of the Gateway year does not give you a qualification in itself, but does lead automatically into our five-year BVetMed programme, which will qualify you to practice as a veterinarian.
This course is open to UK students only, who come from a Widening Participation background. The full criteria can be found on the RVC website.

Additional entry requirements
- Criminal records declaration (DBS/Disclosure Scotland)
- All offer holders will be required to complete a criminal convictions declaration as a condition of their offer.
- Health checks
- Offer-holders will need to pass an Occupational Health assessment before enrolling onto the course.
Applicants should also read the RCVS' guidance on Day One Competences: https://animalowners.rcvs.org.uk/document-library/day-one-competences/
- Interview
- All applicants to this course must attend an interview if invited and cannot receive an offer without attending an interview. Interviews usually take place at our Camden campus between mid-February and the end of March.
Invitations to interview are sent by email around 2-3 weeks before the interview date. Once issued, applicants are required to respond to their interview invitation within 5 working days. If invited, it may not be possible to rearrange an interview for a different date, so applicants must ensure they are available for interview before applying and inform us by email of any specific days when they are unavailable.
Please note that if you apply to more than one of our Veterinary Medicine courses (excluding the Bachelor of Veterinary Science) and your application progresses to the interview stage, you will be invited to attend one interview only which will be used in our assessment of each of your applications.
- Other
- All applicants must submit an online supplementary form five days after the date that their application is received. The form will be available in our application portal and applicants will be given access to this, and notified of the need to complete the form, via email on receipt of their application. The form must be submitted independently of, and in addition to, the UCAS application and the RVC will not contact applicants reminding them to submit the form before the deadline given.
In the form, applicants will need to demonstrate that they meet our Widening Participation requirements.
The RVC uses email as the primary method for contacting applicants about their application. Emails may be sent from either admissions@rvc.ac.uk or myapplication@rvc.ac.uk and applicants are strongly encouraged to take the necessary steps to ensure emails from these addresses do not end up in spam or junk inboxes, as the RVC cannot accept responsibility for any applications that are unsuccessful as a result of missed information or deadlines.
