Course summary

Our BNurs/MNurs Adult Nursing course will help you become a skilled and highly sought-after graduate nurse specialising in caring for adult patients in a range of settings.

You will split your time equally between learning theory on campus and applying your knowledge to practice alongside other health professionals in a range of healthcare settings.

You will receive support from both our staff and your fellow students throughout your time at Manchester, as well as from experienced colleagues in practice.

As a graduate, you'll have the choice of practicing as a nurse, going into a specialist or a leadership role, or undertaking further study, research opportunities or teaching.

The BNurs award is for the three-year undergraduate course. Depending on your performance in Years 1 and 2, you will have the opportunity to apply to extend your studies by a year to undertake an integrated master's in nursing. This will also involve an additional year of tuition fees.

By choosing to complete the integrated master's, you are preparing for career progression within nursing by developing your leadership and research skills.

The integrated master's will deliver units at postgraduate level, developing your skills in critical engagement with issues at the forefront of your chosen field of nursing. You will learn how to critically examine, reflect and develop new insights, contributing to nursing research, education and clinical practice agenda through your research study.

A level - BBC

BBC including at least one science from the following subjects: Biology, Chemistry, Psychology, Sociology, Health and Social Care, Applied Science. Practical skills are a crucial part of science education and therefore will be a requirement to pass the practical element of any science A Level taken. Where applicants are applying for science and related degrees, this is likely to be made explicit in the offer you will receive. Applicants taking A Levels are normally expected to offer three full A Levels. If you’re taking more than three A Levels, these won’t be included in your offer. We will only make offers consisting of three A Levels. Typical Contextual Offer: This course is not eligible for a contextual offer. Contextual offers are only available for courses that have a standard entry requirements of ABB or higher. Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (first teaching from September 2016) - DDD

We consider the National Extended Diploma for entry provided it is in a subject relevant to the chosen course (BTEC Health and Social Care or Applied Science). Entry requirements are based on achievement of the full National Extended Diploma with grades DDM. 1/3 of the units undertaken must be in a science or science related subject.

Access to HE Diploma

We require a QAA-recognised Access to HE diploma (a minimum of 60 credits overall with at least 45 at Level 3). The specific course requirements are: of the 45 credits at level 3, 30 must be at Distinction grade and the remaining 15 credits at merit grade. Also, 30 of the 45 level 3 credits must be in science or health-science related subjects. We also require 5 GCSE subjects at Grade C/4 and which must include English Language, Mathematics and Science. We no longer accept equivalents to GCSE for English and Maths. We may also consider other factors on an individual basis, such as additional educational achievements, life experience and work related skills. If you are a mature applicant and do not meet the GCSE requirements, please contact the admissions team directly.

Scottish Higher

We require grades BBCCC including one science related subject eg Biology, Chemistry, Psychology plus one Advanced Higher at grade B/C. There are GCSE requirements which must include English Language, Maths and Science at a minimum of Grade C/4 or above.

AS level results are not considered as part of the standard admissions process at The University of Manchester.

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Diploma (first teaching from September 2016) - DM

We consider the National Diploma for entry. Entry requirements are based on achievement of the full National Diploma with grades DM plus an additional A Level at grade B. Either the BTEC National Diploma or A Level must be in a science or science related subject (eg Chemistry, Biology, Psychology, Health and Social Care, Applied Science).

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Foundation Diploma (first teaching from September 2016) - DD

We consider the National Foundation Diploma for entry. Entry requirements are based on achievement of the full National Foundation Diploma with grade D plus two additional A Levels at grade BC. Either the BTEC National Foundation Diploma or A Level must be in a science or science related subject (eg Chemistry, Biology, Psychology, Health and Social Care, Applied Science).

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate (first teaching from September 2016) - D

Scottish Advanced Higher

We require grades BBCCC including one science related subject eg Biology, Chemistry, Psychology plus one Advanced Higher at grade B/C. There are GCSE requirements which must include English Language, Maths and Science at a minimum of Grade C/4 or above.

International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme - 30 points

30 points overall. 5,5,4 in Higher Level subjects. Must include at least one science related subject from Biology, Chemistry, Sports and Health Science or Psychology. Applicants studying the International Baccalaureate Career Related Programme (IBCP) should contact the admissions team prior to applying so that their academic profile can be considered.

WJEC Level 3 Advanced Skills Baccalaureate Wales

We welcome and recognise the value of the Baccalaureate Wales and accept the Advanced Skills Baccalaureate Wales (replacing the Advanced Skills Challenge Certificate from September 2023). We require minimum Grade B from the Advanced Skills Baccalaureate Wales and two A Levels at grade B and C, normally including at least one science (eg Biology, Chemistry or Psychology). For applicants who have studied the Advanced Skills Challenge Certificate, this qualification will still be accepted in lieu of one A-level (normally the lowest A-level grade listed).

Extended Project

The University recognises the benefits of the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) and the opportunities it provides for applicants to develop independent study and research skills. Although the Extended Project will not be included in the conditions of your offer, we strongly encourage you to provide information about the EPQ in your personal statement and at interview. A number of our academic Schools may also choose to take your performance in the EPQ into account should places be available in August for applicants who narrowly miss the entry grades for their chosen course.

GCSE/National 4/National 5

Applicants must demonstrate a broad general education including a minimum of five GCSES at grade 4 (C). These must include English Language, Mathematics and Science. GCSE/IGCSE English Literature will not be accepted in lieu of GCSE/IGCSE English Language. Please note that if you hold English as a second language IGCSE qualification, we may also require you to offer one of our acceptable equivalent English Language qualifications  or achieve a higher grade in your IGCSE than the one stated above. Please contact the admissions team in your academic School/Department for clarification. We do not accept Functional Skills 2 or equivalent qualifications in place of GCSE English and Maths.

OCR Cambridge Technical Extended Diploma - DDM

We consider the Technical Extended Diploma for entry provided it is in a subject relevant to the chosen course (CTEC Health and Social Care or Applied Science). Entry requirements are based on achievement of the full Technical Extended Diploma with grades DDM in Health and Social Care or Applied Science with 1/3 of the units undertaken in science or science related subjects.

OCR Cambridge Technical Diploma - DM

We consider the Technical Diploma for entry.Entry requirements are based on achievement of the full Technical Diploma with grades DM plus an additional A Level at grade B. Either the Cambridge Technical Diploma or A Level must be in a science or science related subject (eg Chemistry, Biology, Psychology, Health and Social Care, Applied Science).

OCR Cambridge Technical Foundation Diploma - DD

We consider the Technical Foundation Diploma for entry. Entry requirements are based on achievement of the full Technical Foundation Diploma with grade D plus two A Levels at Grades BC. Either the Cambridge Technical Foundation Diploma or A Level must be in a science or science related subject (eg Chemistry, Biology, Psychology, Health and Social Care, Applied Science).

T Level - D

We will accept the Health pathway only and require an overall grade of Distinction. Contextual offers do not currently apply to applicants offering T-Level qualifications. Applicants meeting our contextual admissions criteria will not be made a reduced offer. T Level applicants who meet our contextual admissions criteria, and who have been predicted a Merit, may be made an aspirational offer at the standard entry requirements of the course e.g., an offer subject to them achieving an overall grade of Distinction.

The University recognises a number of foundation programmes as suitable for entry to this undergraduate programme:

We accept Health related Foundation Degrees as an entry route to our nursing degree. You must complete the foundation degree (Levels 4 and 5) with an overall distinction grade. You must also have GCSE English and Mathematics at grade C or above and ideally a Science GCSE at grade C or above. We do not accept equivalents to GCSE English or Maths. Other factors are also considered on an individual basis, such as other educational achievements, professional qualifications, life experience and relevant skills.

We consider your full educational background. A decision about your suitability for this course will not be taken based solely on the foundation year completed, and will include all prior qualifications.

Health checks
All offers of a place are subject to satisfactory health screening and an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check (completed prior to registration). The health screening comprises completion of a detailed health questionnaire by the applicant and their General Practitioner and also a medical appointment with the University's Occupational Health Department. In order to be admitted and continue on the course, students must be deemed as medically fit for both practice and theory by the Occupational Health Department.

Please note that if you hold English as a second language iGCSE qualification, we may also require you to offer one of our acceptable equivalent English Language qualifications or achieve a higher grade in your iGCSE than the one stated above. Please contact the academic School for clarification. The UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) requires that every student from outside the UK and the EU must show evidence of a minimum level of English Language in order to be granted a UK visa (Tier 4 visa) to study at undergraduate or postgraduate level. This level is often referred to as the 'B2 level'. Additionally, our individual Schools may ask for specific English Language proficiency levels that are necessary for their academic programmes. In most cases these requirements are likely to be higher than the B2 level.

Sponsorship information

As per the government announcement, all UK nursing students on courses from September 2020 will receive a payment of at least £5,000 a year which they will not need to pay back.
