The BA (Hons) degree in Acting and Performance at LMA is delivered by industry professionals providing a solid grounding in all major genres and practices to prepare the actor for a career across a wide variety of platforms including stage, screen, computer games and radio. This is set within the context of an interesting, relevant programme of supporting theoretical study.
Our actors will experience the dynamic of live performance and screen performance from the very outset of the course whilst simultaneously training and developing their skills in styles, approaches, voice and movement. With a multitude of live performances and products produced across the course, our graduates are prepared with extensive showreel material to assist them on the next part of their journey.

Module 1: Studying Acting and Performance [30 Credits]
Get to know the performance world you’re stepping into. This module introduces you to the rich history of acting and performance – from iconic practitioners to game-changing moments in theatre and screen. You’ll learn how performance genres are shaped and how the industry works, while also developing essential academic skills like research, referencing, and presenting your ideas clearly. Through a mix of online lectures and hands-on workshops, you’ll explore how debates around the arts influence the way we perform today.
Module 2: Screen Acting 1 [20 Credits]
Step into the world of screen acting and learn how to adapt your skills for the camera. You’ll explore everything from shot composition and set etiquette to interpreting scripts and bringing characters to life on screen. Whether you're working solo or as part of a cast, you’ll gain experience using cameras, sound equipment, and working with a crew in a studio setting. Plus, you’ll learn to give and receive feedback, building confidence and professionalism in front of and behind the lens.
Module 3: Acting Skills and Techniques [40 Credits]
This hands-on module builds your foundation as a confident and capable performer. You’ll explore key acting pillars—voice, movement, improvisation, and devising—through practical workshops and ensemble activities. Learn to shape characters, respond to creative prompts, and work collaboratively to bring original ideas to life. With input from a variety of performance techniques and practitioners, you’ll sharpen your ability to create, connect, and perform with intention and technique.
Module 4: Acting Live Performance [30 Credits]
Bring it all to life in front of a live audience. In this module, you’ll develop and perform a wide range of material, both in the studio and on stage. Through ensemble rehearsals and performance workshops, you’ll build professional rehearsal discipline, develop original ideas, and showcase your versatility as a performer. You’ll also reflect on your strengths and set goals for your future in the industry – all while gaining real-world performance experience.
Module 1: Exploring Acting and Performance
Delve into the deeper themes and debates that shape the world of acting and performance. In this module, you’ll explore how live and recorded works are interpreted and received by audiences, analysing political, social, ethical, and cultural issues. You'll gain the skills to research and apply theoretical perspectives, use digital tools to support your analysis, and examine the sustainability of creative practices in today’s arts industries.
Module 2: Screen Acting 2
Take your screen acting to the next level by exploring different genres and camera setups—from film and TV drama to commercials and soap opera. You’ll learn to work effectively on single and multi-camera productions, refine your characterisation techniques, and analyse professional screen performances to improve your own. You'll also gain practical experience filming on location and in the studio, while adapting to new technologies shaping today’s screen industry.
Module 3: Advanced Acting Skills and Techniques
This dynamic module builds on your foundational training, helping you become a more versatile and reflective performer. Through targeted voice, movement, and devising workshops, you'll explore global performance traditions and integrate various techniques to suit different roles and styles. You'll also evaluate your progress, reflect on your creative journey, and plan how to meet your long-term goals in acting and performance.
Module 4: Staging Classical and Contemporary Performance
Master the craft of performing classical and modern works through intensive studio practice. This module develops your understanding of staging techniques like blocking, space, and audience connection while exploring contrasting performance styles. You’ll work with iconic texts and innovative new material, staging both a short classical scene and a full-length contemporary production in a professional theatre setting.
Acting Major Performance
Step into the world of professional theatre with a major performance project that brings everything you’ve learned to life. You’ll work collaboratively with your peers to plan, rehearse and stage a complex production—mirroring real-world industry practice. Along the way, you’ll explore different styles and interpretations, take creative risks, and build a deeper understanding of ethical and sustainable production values. This is your chance to showcase your stagecraft and acting ability at a high level in front of a live audience.
Acting Performance Showcase
This is your moment to shine. In your final showcase, you’ll create a bespoke selection of performance material that shows off your talent, versatility and unique voice as an actor. Working independently and with others, you’ll present a portfolio to a professional standard—designed to grab the attention of future employers and casting agents. From simulated auditions to final performance, everything reflects real industry expectations, giving you the tools and confidence to launch your career.
Promotional Portfolio
Prepare to launch your dance career with a comprehensive promotional portfolio. You’ll learn how to market yourself professionally through showreels, websites, digital branding, CV writing, and promotional materials. Industry insight sessions and career planning workshops will help you identify your target audience and employment sector while giving you the tools to present yourself confidently to agents, employers, casting directors, and producers across the performance industries.
Industry Investigation
Take control of your learning by researching a topic that reflects your personal interests and future career goals within the creative industries. You’ll explore an area of contemporary debate, emerging trend, or professional issue in depth—applying research skills, critical analysis, and academic writing techniques to create a fully developed research project. This independent investigation allows you to showcase your intellectual curiosity and professional insight alongside your performance training.

Course optionsIf you are taking 3 A levels you are required to achieve 96 UCAS tariff points from the 3 subjects you are taking
Achieve a minimum of 96 tariff points achieved from either five Highers or a combination of two Highers offered with two Advanced Highers. Where only Highers have been taken a minimum of (CCCCD) is required.
A Pass in an Access to HE Diploma in a subject relevant to the course you wish to study at LMA
Normally all applicants are required to have achieved a minimum of 4 GCSE's or equivalent at Grade 4 or above. This should include GCSE English Language or English Literature at Grade 4.
You are required to achieve a minimum of grades Merit, Merit in a BTEC National Diploma, Level 3
LMA are happy to accept a wide range of qualifications, including but not limited to: A Levels, BTEC Extended Diploma, OCR Cambridge Technical Extended Diploma, BTEC Subsidiary Diploma(s), Access to HE courses, Scottish Highers, IB Diploma Programme, Foundation Diploma in Art and Design, RSL Level 3 Diploma and T Levels.
We also welcome students who have a combination of qualifications - e.g. 2 A Levels and 1 BTEC Subsidiary Diploma and an extended project.
Our academic entry criteria from qualifications you are currently taking is 96 UCAS tariff points and your offer will be tailored to reflect this.
