Course summary

Electrical and electronic engineering is one of the broadest engineering disciplines and uses cutting-edge technology to address some of the major concerns of the modern world. There is a growing demand for skilled graduates to work in industries such as consumer electronics, alternative energy and transport, medical engineering, and communications.

Years one and two provide a strong grounding in mathematics, computing, analogue and digital electronics, communications, electromagnetics, electrical systems, and control.

Year three includes a group design project and specialist units in electrical, electronic and communication subjects.

In the fourth year you will undertake an individual project and choose from a wide variety of optional taught units which are informed by the latest technological developments and underpinned by research-informed teaching. The first three years are common with the BEng in Electrical and Electronic Engineering and transfer on to the BEng is possible before the end of year three.

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (first teaching from September 2016) - DDD

DDD in EITHER Engineering BTEC National Level 3 Extended Diploma, plus A in Mathematics at A-level (or equivalent), OR any Applied General BTEC National Level 3 Extended Diploma, plus A in Mathematics at A-level (or equivalent). Applicants taking Engineering BTEC may be invited to take the University of Bristol Maths test in place of A-level Mathematics: https://www.bristol.ac.uk/study/undergraduate/after-you-apply/interviews/maths-tests/

Access to HE Diploma - D: 30 credits M: 15 credits

Access to HE Diploma in Engineering, Science, or Computing (or similar titles) with 30 credits at Distinction and 15 at Merit, and A in A-level Mathematics. Or Access to HE Diploma in Engineering, Science, or Computing (or similar titles) with 30 credits at Distinction and 15 at Merit, we require at least 12 Level 3 graded Maths credits at Distinction which must cover Algebra, Calculus and Trigonometry. (We may ask for Distinctions in particular units or combinations of units to satisfy subject requirements), and achieving the required level in the University of Bristol mathematics test. Mature students can contact mature-students@bristol.ac.uk to check the suitability of their Access course.

Scottish Advanced Higher - AA

Advanced Higher: AA including Mathematics.

International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme - 32 - 36 points

Standard offer: 36 points overall with 18 at Higher Level, including 6 at Higher Level in Mathematics (either Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretations). Contextual offer: 32 points overall with 16 at Higher Level, including 6 at Higher Level in Mathematics (either Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretations). WJEC Level 3 Advanced Skills Baccalaureate Wales

Requirements are as for A-levels, where you can substitute a non-subject specific grade for the Advanced Skills Baccalaureate Wales or the Welsh Baccalaureate Advanced Skills Challenge Certificate at that grade.

Welsh Baccalaureate - Advanced Skills Challenge Certificate (last awarded Summer 2024)

Requirements are as for A-levels, where you can substitute a non-subject specific grade for the Welsh Baccalaureate Advanced Skills Challenge Certificate at that grade.

Cambridge International Pre-U Certificate - Principal

Requirements for principal subjects are as for A-level, where D1/ D2 is A*, D3 is A, M1/ M2 is B, and M3 is C.
