Course summary

Course Overview

Our foundation year programme balances the many areas of renewable and sustainable Energy engineering. It will enable you to develop essential skills for this exciting fast-paced industry.

Do you have the ability to study for a degree, but don’t have the necessary formal qualifications for the Honours Degree Course? This foundation year degree course could be for you.

We're preparing the next generation of energy engineers to tackle society's pressing issue: the future energy supply security. On this course you’ll explore the generation, transmission, storage and uses of renewable energy. This will prepare you to pursue a rewarding and sustainable career in engineering.

As scientists make dire predictions about the catastrophic impact that climate change is likely to have on future generations, governments and industries are seeking new ways of powering our homes, cities and economies without devastating our world.

You’ll be studying in a university fully committed to sustainability and ethical practices. We are recognised both globally and nationally by professional bodies and we rank as a Gold Tier University in the Green Universities Report 2022.

We have been recognised by the Carbon Literacy Project. The project recently awarded us with a Bronze Carbon Literate Organisation status. We are one of only 13 Universities worldwide to achieve this status.

On our BEng (Hons) Renewable and Sustainable Energy Engineering course, you can tailor the degree to suit your interests. Whether it’s:

  • Designing and installing renewable energy systems such as wind or solar

  • Working with nuclear power

  • Designing tomorrow’s carbon capture technology

  • Providing future advice on energy efficiency and low carbon technology to business and industry

Why study with us

  • Become an innovator at the forefront of the green energy revolution. Our industry-led course will give you the skills to thrive in this rapidly advancing sector.

  • You’ll learn from the experts - we regularly host industry partners for guest lectures and research projects. Previous events have featured BRE Group, Carbon Trust, Energy Institute, Fire and Rescue Services, Shell, GexCon, Tyco and many others.

  • Outside the classroom you can join our Sustainable Engineering programmes such as the Eco–Car Challenge and our new Wind project, working with a diverse group of students and staff on projects using complex systems.

What you'll do

  • Study renewable energy technologies and innovative approaches to meet the challenges of climate change, such as novel carbon capture and hydrogen use.

  • Engage in live projects with industry partners in our Engineering Innovation Centre. Here you'll be able to put your knowledge of technical design, power generation and project management to the test.

  • Further advance your career prospects through an optional 48-week industry placement between Year 2 and Year 3.

Careers

Renewable and Sustainable Energy is a vital component to tackling climate change. Graduates are in greater demand than ever - your career options within this sector can be varied and will involve many exciting roles.

There are an estimated 250,000 jobs in the UK energy sector. These jobs cover:

  • Renewable and sustainable electricity and heat production

  • Energy consultancy

  • Energy efficiency consultancy

  • Technology development

  • Marine energy deployment and development

  • Biomass utilisation

  • Deriving energy from waste

Lancashire and the North West represent a powerhouse in the UK energy sector. Both significantly contribute to the Renewable and Nuclear Energy sectors. Major investments have attracted prestigious businesses to the area serving the nuclear, water, energy transmission and distribution sectors.
