Health and wellbeing is a global business and is high on the political agenda as there are increasing numbers of people living with chronic disease worldwide. Many of these have non-communicable diseases that could have been prevented or managed by engaging in physical activity and exercise, yet the number of people meeting the physical activity guidelines, remains too low. As a result, employment opportunities in the health and exercise sector have grown to unprecedented levels. Future health care needs are becoming more focused on prevention to avoid the rising costs associated with chronic conditions such as CVD, cancer, obesity, diabetes and related conditions, as well as an ageing population. Therefore, exercise scientists, advanced practitioners, fitness professionals and researchers will play increasingly crucial roles in improving wellbeing, preventing disease and extending the lives of those with life-limiting conditions.
This course brings together many of the skills and underpinning knowledge found in more traditional courses such as sport science, public health, physiotherapy, coaching, and strength & conditioning. The degree enables you to achieve competence in participant screening, physiological testing, and exercise prescription across a range of settings including gym, clinical, community, and virtual environments. You will apply critical thinking and scientific reasoning to design and tailor interventions for individuals or communities and utilise evidence-based behaviour change techniques to optimise adherence. These skills will enhance your employability skills to work in public health, physical activity, active schools, health promotion, personal training, health education, the NHS, the fitness industry, or to go on to complete postgraduate study in research or to work in clinical settings. The course has been developed in line with CIMSPAs professional standards to ensure that the course is linked to the skills that employers require.
The Division of Public Health, Sport and Wellbeing has an excellent reputation in sport and exercise courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, with considerable teaching and research expertise in the fields. Our staff are enthusiastic and helpful, and pride themselves on the extra support they provide to those who require it.
