Based on your planned and agreed proposal or statement of intent, the program is designed to reflect your individual experience and your aspirations. It is an intensive course involving you in an ambitious self-initiated carving research project. The course is intended to be primarily self-directed and to complement your individual research interests and practical experience.
The department’s focus on the wide range of skills required to become a professional carver provides a back drop to your studies with access to the teaching of advanced carving techniques, drawing, modelling, casting, portraiture, artistic anatomy, ornament study, heraldry, design, and professional skills related to project management, working as a freelance practitioner or as a member of a specialist team.
You will be encouraged to undertake commissions where relevant whilst on the course and tutors can provide help and advice on these projects that will support you to develop your professional portfolio.
All the tutors are well-established professionals who work on some of the country’s most prestigious projects alongside teaching in the department. This ensures that the course is outward looking and highly vocational, while the tutors provide a network of professional contacts that frequently supports future employment. The Department has an unusually high ratio of staff to students, ensuring that each student has the regular contact and support that the learning of carving demands.
