The Community and Social Transformation pathway offers opportunities for students to engage with emerging theologies of transformational practices – exploring the complex questions that emerge for Christians engaged in community development and relief & humanitarian development.
The MA Theology (Community and Social Transformation) (and linked PGDip and PGCert awards) invites students to explore the interface of theology, faith, cultures and development practices within a community of practice. The pathway centres on critical reflection on praxis, the relationship between lived experience, transformational practices and theological frameworks, as applied to development work, social justice, anti-poverty approaches and community cohesion.
Students in this pathway will take three core classes: Theological Foundations for Understanding & Practicing Community (ST7701), The Kingdom of God, Power, & Social Change (ST7702), and Shalom in Action: Christian Approaches to Humanitarian/Development Practices (ST7670). In addition, students will take one pathway unit. Available pathway units are as follows: Theology and Culture (CT7630), Models of Theological Reflection (PT7620), Leadership and Change (PT7631), Leading Enterprises (PT7632), Social Entrepreneurship (PT7633), Leadership & Management in Youth Ministry (PT7655), Urban Ministry & Mission in the Global World (PT7660), Socio-Cultural Anthropology for Missional Practice (PT7720), Foundations of Mission Studies (ST7510), Urban Ministry & Mission (ST7600), Social & Pastoral Implications of Christian Holiness (ST7610), The Church and the City (ST7630), Practices of Social Justice (ST7640), Independent Study (ST7660), Contemporary Missiology & Culture: Map the Landscape (ST7665), Contemporary Missiology & Culture: Emerging Issues (ST7666), Community Engagement: Communities of Shalom (ST7680), Theories and Theologies of Change (ST7703), Re-Imagining the World: Transformational Learning towards Social Change (ST7704), Theology & Ecology: Creation and Crisis (ST7800), Environmentalism and Christian Spirituality (ST7801), Research Methods & Literature Review (AS7595).

The cost of studying at NTC—and the options on how to pay—depend on the course you choose and whether you’re a UK/EU student or visiting us from further afield.
