Study our degree in Education with Sustainability to bring meaningful ethical and practical changes to educational settings.

Develop the knowledge and experience for current and future classroom roles and many other education-focused careers.

Study how education intersects with planetary health, sociology, policy, globalisation, technology, and social justice.

Passionate about environmental and social change and its effects on education? Come and work with renowned subject specialists in the field of environmental sustainability education and research and gain expertise that will set you apart in the jobs market.

Alongside academic knowledge, you’ll build practical experience through volunteering, collaborative work and community engagement.

On our BA (Hons) Education with Sustainability, you’ll critically engage with key topics to understand the influence of environmental sustainability in different educational settings.

Gain a grounding in the historical and future development and progression of environmental sustainability education (ESE) in policy and practice. Explore theories on outdoor learning, place-responsive teaching and creative pedagogies, and conduct research on these approaches.

Discover global perspectives on environmental justice in education, including eco-feminism, the Anthropocene and systems thinking, and consider how these affect policy and practice in education across local, national and transnational scales.

Careers

You'll gain specialisms in environmental sustainability, including outdoor learning, place-responsive pedagogy, conservation education, and environmental justice opening doors to a wide range of sectors.

You could work in education in schools, FE colleges, environmental charities, zoological/botanical attractions and museums, or in policy making/research nationally or transnationally.

You could also continue your studies with a PGCE or other teacher training, or an MA Education, which can lead to work in academic research and teaching.

What can you do with an Education with Sustainability degree?

With further training you could progress to teaching, leadership or other roles within the education sector. You may choose to work in policy, charitable, research or leadership roles or train future educators.

Year 3: Equity in Education: Understanding Identity and Social Justice; Ruskin Module; Learning Theories in Education; Educational Research Methods; What's in a Place?

Year 4: Undergraduate Major Project; Neurodiversity and Inclusion: Strategies for Effective Learning; Education in the Digital Age: Policy, Theory and Global Trends; Leadership and Enterprise; Education and Environmental Justice.

Assessment method

You’ll show your knowledge and understanding through a range of creative methods. These include digital scrapbooks, reflective journals and presentation tasks, as well as more traditional forms of assessment such as essays.

Qualification requirements

5 GCSEs at grade D, or grade 3, or above and evidence of two years post-GCSE study at Level 3.

If you have achieved at least grade E in one A level, or equivalent, you are exempt from the two years post-GCSE study requirement, but you still must meet the GCSE requirements.

Applicants who do not meet the two years post GCSE study at level 3 may be considered based on their satisfactory employment history, which must be a minimum of two years full time employment supported by employer evidence and deemed appropriate by the University for meeting the course of study applied for.
