A Masters by Research (MScR) programme is ideal if you would like to complete a short piece of independent research in French and Francophone studies. The programme is a good stepping-stone to a PhD, but is equally of value as a stand-alone qualification.
An MScR programme is likely to suit you if:
you have a clear idea what you would like to write your masters dissertation about, right from the beginning of the programme
you would like to be part of a large and supportive postgraduate community, while working independently
On this programme:
you will take courses in research skills and methods
you will complete two research assignments, each of 6,000 words
you will write a 15,000 word dissertation under the guidance of an experienced and well-published supervisor
French is a major world language, spoken in many parts of Europe, Africa and the Americas. Our programme is designed to enable students who have taken a first degree in French to specialise in an aspect of French or Francophone literature or culture, while acquiring core skills in theories and methods of study.
French has been studied at Edinburgh since 1894. Today, French and Francophone studies at Edinburgh is one of the largest and best-established subject areas of its kind in the UK.
Our specialisms cover French and Francophone cultural production from the Middle Ages to the present. Our expertise extends across a broad range of cross-disciplinary areas within the fields of literary studies, visual cultures, politics and philosophy. These include:
post- and decolonial studies
intermediality and transcultural exchange
gender and queer studies
Medieval and early modern studies
Our research collections, resources and facilities are outstanding.
