University of Sunderland in London - Open Day
14 Mar 2026, 13:00
London
This is based on outputs that students have already produced, such as articles in peer-reviewed journals. Typically, candidates are academics with high-quality research outputs who have not previously undertaken a PhD.
Assessment is based on a commentary of up to 20,000 words that demonstrates how their research outputs have contributed to new knowledge.
Entry requirements
The normal entry requirement for a research degree is a UK honours degree (first or upper second class) or a UK Masters degree or a qualification which is regarded as equivalent. We will consider candidates with other qualifications, looking at evidence of academic ability such as published work.
If English is not your first language, you will need a British Council International English Language Testing System (IELTS) overall score of 6.5, with at least 6.0 in each component: reading, writing, listening and speaking (or equivalent).
Subject Spotlights give you the chance to try a higher education course before you apply. Delivered by the lecturers themselves you will gain insight into what it's like to study the course and give your personal statement a boost.
