Overview
The world urgently needs a new generation to help tackle global challenges like inequality, conflict, sustainability, and social justice. If you’re ready to make a difference, our BA in Global Development with a Placement Year will equip you with the knowledge and skills to drive meaningful change.

From day one, you’ll work alongside research-active lecturers to explore the lasting impacts of colonial and imperial legacies. You’ll uncover why partnerships between the Global South and Global North are essential for fair and just development and learn how to challenge power structures that drive inequality on local, national, and global scales.

You’ll explore how cross-cultural dialogues, resistance, mobilisation, and social action can achieve greater social and environmental justice and how people in different parts of the world shape development. You'll be encouraged to expand your understanding of diverse perspectives on development and experiment with action-driven research methods.

At UEA, you’ll be joining one of the UK’s longest established and most prestigious undergraduate Global Development courses. Our School of Global Development (DEV) is a vibrant community of interdisciplinary academics and 1st in the UK for Development Studies (REF 2021). You’ll connect to our exciting global development networks through our work placement programme. Recent destinations for work placements include Uganda, Peru, Thailand, Ghana, Cambodia, Belgium, Tanzania, and Cyprus, where students have joined educational, health, and environmental organisations.

Upon graduation, you'll have the professional skills and confidence to engage in critical global development debates. Whether you aspire to be a researcher, policymaker, NGO worker, activist, entrepreneur, filmmaker, writer, or teacher, a degree in Global Development will open doors to many rewarding careers.     I enjoy developing myself as a student, learning new skills and interacting with people. A favorite pastime of mine is reading, especially thrillers but I'm open to other genres as well. I'm originally from India, specifically from Lucknow, the city of Nawabs (and Tunday kababs), and relish trying new foods and connecting with people from different cultures through their traditions :) Having grown up in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, that is the place I call home. The links I have to all these different places has given me a broader worldview, and allowed me to experience life from a different lens.

    In the future I don't know exactly what I want to do but I would like to work in a museum or with conservation. I am currently completing my study abroad in Ghent, Belgium and it has been one of the best opportunities of my life, I have been able to meet people from all across the world and study new and interesting classes. As someone with a passion for stage and screen, I chose the Drama and Creative Writing course at UEA to develop and acquire more skills that would allow me to succeed in my career path. I am particularly passionate about scriptwriting, acting and filmmaking, so in the future, I hope I can dedicate myself to all of them.
