Mechanical engineers are found in every aspect of the engineering industry. They are innovative professionals, transforming ideas into inventions. Mechanical Engineering is a key discipline in today’s highly technological society, and mechanical engineers are involved in the design and manufacture of almost everything you see or touch.
This degree will train you for a rewarding career in a wide range of engineering sectors and develop the key skills required to become a professional engineer. You will gain the ability to use analytical skills and tools to formulate and solve problems relevant to the application of engineering to industry. The degree will also provide a foundation for you to aim for the prized Chartered Engineer status.

The Mechanical Engineering course at Swansea University is accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) on behalf of the Engineering Council for the purposes of partially meeting the educational requirement for Further Learning for Engineering Council registration as a Chartered Engineer.
Accreditation is a mark of assurance that the degree meets the standards set by the Engineering Council in the UK Standard for Professional Engineering Competence (UK-SPEC). Studying on this accredited degree will provide you with some of the underpinning knowledge, understanding and skills needed as a Chartered Engineer. Some employers prefer to recruit preferentially from accredited degrees, and an accredited degree is likely to be recognised by many countries that are signatories to international accords.

In Year 1, you will typically study areas including: Engineering for People Hackathon, Data analysis and simulation, Introduction to Materials Engineering, Engineering Mathematics (EEE, General and Mech), Applied Mechanics, Engineering Design and Tutorials, Placement Preparation, Manufacturing Technology and Thermofluids.
In Year 2, you will typically study areas including: AI, Machine Learning and Data Analysis, Machines and Control, Thermofluids, Mechanical Engineering Design and Practice, Placement Preparation, Research Project Preparation, Dynamics and others.
In Year 3, you will undertake an Industrial Placement.
In Year 4, you will typically study areas including: Engineering Management, Intelligent Manufacturing and Robotics, Finite Element Method, Dynamics, Mechanical Engineering Practice and Design and Fluid Mechanics. You will also undertake an Individual Engineering Project.

To include a B in Mathematics
Considered on an individual basis.
We recognise the EPQ as an excellent indicator of success.
If you are predicted a Grade B or above in the EPQ, you will receive an offer with a one
grade reduction, to include your EPQ with a grade B.
To include 5 at Higher Level or 6 at Standard Level Mathematics or, if following the new Maths Curriculum, 5 at HL (or 6 at SL) “Mathematics: analysis and approaches”, or 5 at HL (or 7 at SL) “Mathematics: applications and interpretation”.
Plus 4 at Higher Level or 5 at Standard Level English Language.
Swansea University accepts the Advanced Skills Baccalaureate Wales as fully equivalent to x1 A-Level.
To include B at A Level Mathematics. Must be in relevant subject. If student is not taking A Level Mathematics, they must achieve a minimum D in ‘Mathematics for Technicians’ and D in ‘Further Mathematics for Technicians’ modules of the BTEC. Students are also required to have minimum two A grades at GCSE, to include a minimum grade B in Mathematics and two other Science subjects.
Accepted in lieu of one non-subject specific grade at A Level.
GCSEs: Mathematics C, English Language C.

UK applicants who meet course requirements are guaranteed a conditional offer. We assess applications on individual merit. We consider making reduced offers, eg. to Care Leavers or students with extenuating circumstances. We encourage you to disclose any relevant circumstances.
The Advanced Skills Baccalaureate Wales is considered as equivalent to one full A-Level and students can take x2 A-levels alongside this. EPQ students predicted Grade B or above will receive a one-grade offer reduction.
