Course summary

Pharmacology is the study of how medicines work and how they affect us. This Pharmacology with Foundation Year BSc is aimed at those who are not quite ready to enter our three year Pharmacology BSc (B200) and need to further develop confidence and subject-specific academic skills. Successful completion of the Foundation Year enables you to progress onto the three year Pharmacology BSc. The Foundation Year is also designed to prepare students for our other undergraduate degree programmes, B102 BSc Biomedical Science and B200 BSc Pharmacology and it is possible to transfer onto one of these programmes, subject to successfully passing the Foundation Year.

Designed to equip you with science-based skills and knowledge in medicines and how they work, as well as how they are used, and assessed for their effectiveness and value, the course combines different forms of teaching that cover the principles of pharmacology, cancer and cardiovascular pharmacology, pharmacogenomics, pharmacoeconomics, and many other topic areas.

State-of-the-art labs allow you to develop and apply your knowledge at the interface of scientific discovery and clinical practice. A solid foundation in medical sciences, including biomedical science, human physiology and microbiology, helps you understand how and why treatments work. You will study how drugs are discovered and developed, how they are trialled in humans, and licensed for clinical use by regulatory agencies. Unique to this BSc (Hons) Pharmacology is the study of how medicines are approved by healthcare providers, such as the NICE (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence).

‘Placement Year’ and 'International Experience Year’ options are available for this course. You will have the opportunity to fully consider these options when you have started your course at Bangor and can make an application for a transfer onto such a pathway at the appropriate time. You can find more information about these options on our website and if you have any questions, please get in touch.
