Closing Our Gap Master’s by Research Scholarships

The Closing Our Gap postgraduate research scholarship programme has been established to address the persistent under-representation of individuals from Black, Asian, Mixed Heritage, and Other Minoritised Ethnic backgrounds in postgraduate research.

The University is deeply committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive research community and takes great pride in recruiting students from a broad range of backgrounds. This initiative forms part of a wider institutional effort to transform postgraduate research by creating equitable opportunities and cultivating inclusive environments that support world-leading scholarship.

Through this programme, the University seeks to enhance access to and participation in postgraduate research among Black, Asian, Mixed Heritage, and Other Minoritised Ethnic students. This objective is pursued through collaborative efforts aimed at dismantling systemic barriers that have historically contributed to under-representation in academia. Ultimately, the goal is to use this initiative as a catalyst for change both to redress existing inequities and to foster academic cultures in which all students can thrive.

In 2025-26, four PhD and four Master’s by Research scholarships are available.

Award

MSc or MA by Research Scholarship including:

• a tuition fee waiver for one year
• an annual expense allowance of £500.
