NMITE Young Adult Carers Bursary

Scholarship information

(This bursary can be awarded in addition to any other bursary you may be in receipt of).

This bursary is for new undergraduate students from the UK who are young adult carers.  

You are classed as a young adult carer if you are a carer between the ages of 18 and 25 who looks after a relative or friend, of any age, due to:  

  • disability
  • chronic or terminal illness
  • mental health problems
  • alcohol or drug addiction/dependency  

To be eligible, you must also:  

  • be enrolled on either a degree level programme with or without Foundation year.
  • started your course here in the academic year 2026/27
  • be aged 25 years or under at the start of the course  

Please email your expression of eligibility for the Young Adult Carers Bursary to bursaries@nmite.ac.uk by 5pm on 26 June 2026.  Students are required to provide evidence of their status as a young adult carer; This should be in the form of an original letter by a professional person (e.g. teacher/adviser from school/college, GP, social services, or local authority) who is not a family member or the cared for person. This person should normally have known about the situation for a substantial amount of time and can verify that the student has caring responsibilities and for whom they care.   

The Bursary is worth £500 per academic year of study.  

Awards cannot be claimed retrospectively for previous academic years.  

The Bursary is paid in one instalment normally at the mid-way point for each FHEQ level of study

The funding will support one student through up to three years of study 

Students cannot receive more than one Care Leaver, Estranged student, and Refugee Bursary. If you meet the eligibility criteria for more than one of these Bursaries, then it will be at the discretion of the Financial Awards Committee which Bursary you receive.
