Value

£6,000 a year for up to three years for one undergraduate student.

Up to £10,000 awarded against tuition fees for one year of study for one postgraduate student

Study level

New, full-time students in their first year only.

Aim of the scholarship

The scholarship is a joint gift in memory of Bernard and Frieda Clowes, who both had long and successful careers in the Manchester textiles design industry. It aims to support undergraduate and postgraduate students on textiles courses.

Check if you can apply

Undergraduate

You must:

  • Hold a firm offer to study a new full-time course in 2026/27, excluding foundation year and distance learning, in BA (Hons) Textiles.
  • Have a household income of £25,000 or less. We’ll check this against your Student Finance application. Please contact us if you will not be applying to Student Finance for a maintenance loan.
  • Be a UK student - English, Scottish, Welsh or Northern Irish - paying the standard full-time fees, and have a UK Student Support Number.
  • Pay for your course yourself, including through a student loan or a payment from your parents. Your course fees must not be paid by a business, charity or other organisation.

Postgraduate

You must: 

  • Hold a firm offer to study a new full-time course in 2026/27, excluding distance learning, in MA/MSc Textiles.
  • Prove your gross income was £25,000 or less in the previous financial year. We’ll accept:
    • P60s
    • Student Finance Entitlement Letters
    • A self-employment tax return
  • Be a UK student - English, Scottish, Welsh or Northern Irish - paying the standard full-time fees, and have a UK Student Support Number.
  • Pay for your course yourself, including through a student loan or a payment from your parents. Your course fees must not be paid by a business, charity or other organisation.

Before you apply, read our application advice.

You’ll need to: 

  • Complete the application form.
  • Add a link to your digital portfolio. You can use your admissions portfolio, but it’s a good idea to update it with your latest work.
  • Postgraduate applicants will need to upload financial evidence for the 2024/25 tax year.

Applications will open 1 January 2026.

If we get a lot of applications, we may ask you to do an interview.
