This bursary is for new undergraduate students from the UK who are irreconcilably estranged from their parents. The Standalone definition states that: an Estranged Student is someone that has not had verbal or written contact with both of their biological, adoptive parents or their only living parent for a significant period of time and this will not change. A significant period of time is usually considered twelve months or longer, but this can also depend on their circumstances.
To be eligible, you must also:
Please email your expression of eligibility for the Estranged Student Bursary to bursaries@nmite.ac.uk by 5pm on 26 June 2026. Students are required to provide evidence of their estranged status; this must be in the form of an original letter by an independent person with good standing in the community (e.g. teacher from school/college or GP). This person should normally have known about their situation for a substantial amount of time and can verify that they do not have contact with their biological, adoptive, or only living parents.
The Bursary is worth £1000 per academic year of study, plus £1000 to help with start-up costs; to a maximum of £4000
The Bursary is paid in three instalments each academic year: normally September, January, and May.
The funding will support one student through up to three years of study
Students cannot receive more than one Care Leaver, Estranged student, and Refugee Bursary. If you meet the eligibility criteria for more than one of these Bursaries, then it will be at the discretion of the Financial Awards Committee which Bursary you receive.
