At the University of Derby we welcome more than 1,700 students from 100 countries who study at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.  

Based in the multi-cultural city of Derby, in the heart of England, we have strong connections with local businesses and industry. We use these links to provide applied, industry-relevant opportunities across a range of subjects, from science, engineering and health care to arts, education, humanities, law and business. 

Career support 

Many of our courses are professionally accredited to give you the best possible start to your career. We also offer expert career advice and a range of placements and internships to build your experience and increase your employability. The Careers and Employment Service is committed to supporting your career journey for up to three-years after you graduate. This means that you can continue to lean on us for expert advice and guidance to help you secure your dream role.   

Academic expertise 

Our teaching team combine industry experience with academic expertise, and many are also distinguished researchers in their field. This means that we a strong reputation for our teaching quality, and have been ranked 2nd for course quality and employability in the Uni Compare Annual Student Review Rankings 2026. 

Campus and city 

Our campus is spread across several sites in Derby, all close to each other, student accommodation and the city centre, and there is a Unibus service available. Our award-winning accommodation provides a great way to live in a safe environment with everything you need close by. You will soon feel settled and make new friends through events and activities organised by the accommodation team through the Residence Life programme.

The city itself is compact and easy to get around, offering plenty to see and do for all tastes. It has Purple Flag status, recognising its safe, varied and entertaining night-time entertainment, and is close to beautiful countryside and attractions including stately homes and theme parks. 

Superb teaching facilities at all of our sites provide industry-standard equipment to help you develop the most up-to-date skills in your chosen discipline. These include our STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) Centre with the latest facilities for computing, technology and engineering; music production and creative studios at Markeaton Street, and industry-standard clinical skills facilities at Kedleston Road. 

Scholarships, bursaries and discounts 

We offer a range of scholarships, bursaries and discounts to our international students to help with the costs of studying with us. They include:

  • Vice-Chancellor’s Scholarship: £2,000 for overseas fee payers who are self-funding their tuition. This is for new students entering a full-time taught postgraduate or undergraduate course at the University of Derby in September 2026 or January 2027. This £2,000 scholarship is in addition to the university's Full Payment Discount, where students who pay their annual tuition fee in full ahead of enrolment enjoy a £1,000 discount.

  • Students who graduated with a full bachelor’s degree from the University of Derby in the academic year 2024/25 or 2025/26 may be eligible for a 25% Alumni Discount if starting a masters programme within 2026/27 (exclusions apply). Students who graduated in 2023/24 or any prior academic year with a full bachelor’s degree from the University of Derby may be eligible for a 10% alumni discount.

Support 

There is a variety of support on offer to help you with your application and during your time as a student with us. This includes visa advice, and a meet and greet service from selected airports. We can also help you to develop your English language skills, either before you start your course or while you are studying. There is also a Multi-Faith Centre, doctor’s surgery and wellbeing centre to take care of both your spiritual and physical needs.
