Student support
Prioritising your health and wellbeing
Our range of free and confidential services can support you in looking after your mental, physical and emotional wellbeing. We offer personalised help to students with disabilities including specific learning difficulties, autism, ADHD, long-term health conditions, mental health diagnoses, and those with care responsibilities or who are estranged. Our tailored support package includes our online screening test for specific learning differences, our in-house non-medical helper team of support workers, and help with arranging accommodation that has been adapted to suit specific needs.
You can also book an appointment with one of our support advisors before you start your studies so that we can make sure any adaptations are put in place ready for your arrival.
Equality, diversity and inclusion
We believe our diverse community is what makes the University of Derby such a special place to be. We are proud to welcome and celebrate students, staff and visitors from all walks of life, and seek to provide a positive environment where everyone has the freedom to express their true self. We do this through student-led societies, staff-led networks, campus celebration events and raising equality awareness. We operate a strict zero tolerance policy which covers all forms of discrimination.
Multi-Faith Centre
Kedleston Road is home to our Multi-Faith Centre where a team of friendly chaplains and faith consultants support students with their religious beliefs. The centre welcomes all students and offers a safe, peaceful and private space to meditate, pray or just escape the day.
Cost of living
Our award-winning accommodation, voted Best Value for Money in the Global Student Living Awards 2025, has fixed price rent with all-inclusive bills meaning there are no hidden costs to worry about. If you are looking for advice on how to make your money go further, you can speak to our Student Money Advisors in the Student Life team for their tried and tested budgeting tips.
Disability support
At the University, we provide bespoke support to all students with disabilities such as arranging accommodation that has been adapted to suit specific needs. The Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA) is available as a non-repayable grant that can help you get the best out of your educational experience. It can be used to cover the cost of specialist equipment, a mentor or interpreter.
