About us

Most degrees ask you to specialise. The world's most important problems don't fit within a single subject. Neither should your education.

The LIS interdisciplinary curriculum spans everything from neuroscience, data science, economics, law and the arts; not as separate subjects, but as tools applied to real problems. Students work directly with organisations including McKinsey, the NHS and KPMG as part of their studies, tackling challenges in AI, climate and inequality with methods that no single discipline could provide alone.

LIS was the first institution in over 50 years to open in the UK with its own degree-awarding powers from inception. With faculty from Oxford, Cambridge and Harvard, and graduates going on to found companies, shape policy and build careers that didn't exist when they enrolled. LIS has built the type of education for those who want to shape the world, not just fit into it.

LIS in 60 seconds

LIS is founded upon a core belief: problem-solving in the 21st century requires a broad set of interdisciplinary approaches and methods. We built this university the LIS way: through a problems-first, interdisciplinary approach, grounded in rigorous methods, with real-world applications.

What makes us different

At the heart of our BASc degree you’ll find three things:

  • Study Complex Problems

Study problems like climate change, inequality, and the future of cities. You'll engage with multiple subjects and disciplines simultaneously, gaining different perspectives on them. You could be taught complexity theory by a physicist one day, and graphic design by an artist the next. You’ll be able to focus on the parts of these problems that interest you, as well as choosing your own problems entirely on occasions.

  • Discover Methods

You will study qualitative and quantitative methods, which will enable you to apply what you know. They are tools and techniques, literacies and competencies, designed to improve your learning by doing and help you take action.

  • Work with real organisations

You’ll have the chance to do genuine work of value throughout your degree - whether that’s via a project brief in term time, where an organisation asks you to help them on a problem, or during your summer internship.
