About us

Sotheby’s Institute of Art traces its foundation to 1969 and the establishment of a training program for young auctioneers at Sotheby's auction house. Since then, the Institute has educated future leaders across all sectors of the art world and now has 8,000+ alumni in prestigious positions across the globe.

The Institute has been independent of the auction house for over 20 years and its London campus is a higher education provider fully recognised by the UK's Office for Students (OfS); its degrees are awarded by the University of Manchester, a member of the Russell Group of leading UK universities, with whom it has been working for over 25 years. It also has a campus in New York, multiple online offerings, and a varied and growing number of international partnerships.

The Institute offers educational programs for anyone seeking expertise in art business, contemporary art, fine and decorative art and design, and luxury business and allied fields.

What makes us different

Institute faculty are experts and leaders in these areas, bringing a wealth of practical knowledge from their professional experiences as well as an impressive academic grounding to all students.

Reflecting a broad range of specialisms, faculty research spans scholarly publications, curatorial projects, and artistic practice. It engages fields including art and design history, curatorial studies, and the art and luxury business. Collectively, this work demonstrates the depth and diversity of our academic inquiry and its relevance to both higher education and industry.

The global Career Services provides all Master’s students with customised services and professional development support, working closely with employers and alumni, helping students turn academic achievements and experiential learning into professional success.

The MA programs are unique in their combination of intensive, experiential learning, academic rigour and vocational and research-based emphases.

Sotheby’s Institute provided me with the art market understanding and the practical skills that I was looking to develop in order to work in the art world, as well as the networking and career advice that I needed to find opportunities upon graduating.
