Study in Coventry

City guide

Discover what it’s really like to live in Coventry as an international student – from top food spots to affordable housing, travel tips, and unforgettable day trips.

Coventry at a glance

Coventry is a vibrant, student-friendly city located in the heart of England. As one of the UK’s fastest-growing cities, it combines a rich medieval history with a modern, multicultural atmosphere. With a large student population thanks to Coventry University and the nearby University of Warwick, the city is well-equipped to support international students with a range of services, events, and communities. You’ll find affordable living, great food, and easy access to other major cities like Birmingham and London.

Coventry is a diverse and open city with lots of different opportunities. It's small enough to get around by foot or bike in no time at all. The city is forever modernising, however it does have some symbolic historical landmarks, such as the Cathedral. (Third year student, Coventry University)

City highlights

Coventry is a city full of contrasts – from the striking Coventry Cathedral, a symbol of post-war peace and reconciliation, to the cutting-edge arts and music scene. The city was UK City of Culture in 2021, and its legacy continues through events at venues like the Herbert Art Gallery and FarGo Village. Don't miss the medieval charm of Spon Street or the innovative displays at the Coventry Transport Museum. The city also boasts a diverse cultural calendar, welcoming festivals, and plenty of green spaces like War Memorial Park.

Transport tips

Getting around Coventry is simple and affordable. The city centre is compact and easy to walk, while local bus services operated by National Express West Midlands connect you to the wider area. Consider getting a student travel card for discounted fares.

For longer trips, Coventry is well-connected by train — with direct routes to London (just over an hour), Birmingham, and Manchester. Students often use a 16-25 Railcard for 1/3 off fares.

Accommodation

Coventry offers a wide range of accommodation options, from university-managed halls to private rentals.

Areas popular with students include Earlsdon, Canley (close to Warwick), and the city centre. Expect to pay less than in many other UK cities, with good access to amenities and transport.

Make sure to budget for essentials like bills, groceries, and internet.

Coventry is generally safe, but like any city, staying alert in unfamiliar areas is wise. Look out for university accommodation support services and local housing fairs.

Where to eat

Coventry’s food scene is as diverse as its population. From independent cafes to international street food at FarGo Village, there's something for every palate. Try My Dhabba for authentic Indian cuisine or Taste Vietnam for budget-friendly Vietnamese dishes. For quick bites, students love the selection at Cathedral Lanes shopping centre. Halal, vegan, and vegetarian options are widely available. Explore the local markets for fresh ingredients if you love to cook at home.

What to visit

Whether you're into history, arts, or just a good view, Coventry delivers. Visit the ruins of the original Coventry Cathedral alongside its stunning modern rebuild. The Coventry Transport Museum offers a fascinating look at the UK’s automotive history. Explore Charterhouse Heritage Park or catch a play at the Belgrade Theatre. For sports fans, Coventry Building Society Arena hosts football matches, rugby, and concerts throughout the year.

Coventry nightlife
Third year student, Coventry University

Coventry is a predominantly student-orientated city, and nightlife is an important part of the university experience. There are pubs and clubs less than ten mins from the university campus (by foot). Most of them have dedicated nights for games, karaoke etc.

Living in Coventry
Third year student, Warwick University

After first year, there are two main choices: Canley/Earsldon or Leamington Spa, with Earlsdon in between Canley and central Coventry. I chose Canley because it's within walking/cycling distance to uni. The Uber fare back [from SU nights out] is within the base rate fare. Houses in Canley tend to have larger rooms for a similar price.

On your doorstep

One of the best things about Coventry is its central location. Just 20 minutes by train is Birmingham, with world-class shopping and entertainment. Take a day trip to Stratford-upon-Avon, the birthplace of Shakespeare, or explore the scenic Cotswolds. For nature lovers, Coombe Abbey Park is only a short bus ride away, perfect for a relaxing walk or picnic with friends. Coventry’s location makes weekend travel across the UK easy and affordable.

Basic safety

It’s important to adhere to basic safety practices when studying and living in any city. Being aware of your surroundings is always wise, especially in busy and populated areas.

Some basic advice from the Metropolitan Police will help to ensure you stay as free from crime as possible:

  • Keep your valuables hidden and don’t carry large amount of cash.
  • Beware of scams, such as street hustlers, unlicensed taxis, and non-official sellers.
  • Keep your belongings, shopping, and luggage close to you at all times.
  • Don’t leave your drinks unattended or accept them from strangers.
  • Travel as a group and always make sure you tell your friends you got home safely, and vice versa.
  • Double check all taxis have a visible and valid licence before using them.
