Supporting students after they’ve submitted their application

We understand this is a huge milestone for students – but as you know submitting an application is not the end of the journey.

The period after submission can bring relief, excitement, and sometimes uncertainty. As an adviser, your guidance is crucial in helping students stay informed, confident, and proactive.

Here are five key ways you can support them post-application.

1. Explain their options if they don’t receive offers

If a student has used all five choices and isn’t holding any offers, they may be eligible for UCAS Extra when it opens on 26 February. Extra allows applicants to apply to additional courses one at a time, giving them another chance to secure a place.

2. Help them understand how to make changes after they've applied

Some elements of an application can be changed after submission, but they'll need to contact the university or college directly for other changes. Find out more.

3. Encourage regular tracking in the UCAS Hub

Once submitted, students can sign in at any time to track their application. This is where they’ll see decisions, understand different types of offers, and check key deadlines for replies. A quick check-in can reassure them nothing has been missed.

4. Reassure them there’s still time to apply

Students can still apply until 30 June 2026. After this date, applications are automatically entered into Clearing, which offers another route into higher education. Reminding students of these timelines can ease pressure and keep options open.

5. Signpost live support from UCAS

On 10 February, UCAS is hosting a live post-application Q&A session for advisers. It’s a great opportunity for you to hear directly from UCAS experts, ask questions, and feel supported. Save your seat and join the conversation.

With the right information at the right time, you can help students navigate this period with confidence – and remind them that support is always available, whatever their next step looks like.
