Course summary

This one-year top-up degree is designed for students who already hold a Level 5 qualification, such as a Higher National Diploma (HND) in Engineering. It enables you to convert your existing qualification into a full Bachelor of Engineering (BEng Hons), enhancing both your academic credentials and career prospects.

The course is closely aligned with industry needs, offering access to specialist equipment and technologies in areas such as heat pumps, carbon capture, engineering control systems, and Industry 4.0. It’s also ideal for employers seeking to upskill their workforce.

Graduates will be awarded a BEng rather than a BSc, and the programme supports progression toward Incorporated Engineer (IEng) accreditation through the Engineering Council.

Modules

You will deepen your understanding of core and emerging areas of engineering, including:

Mechanical and electrical problem-solving

Engineering control systems and fluid dynamics

Digital tools, simulations, and computer-aided analysis

Applied engineering research and project management

Professional communication, including technical writing and presentations

A substantial final-year project that reflects real-world engineering challenges

The course also includes activities to build your confidence, problem-solving skills, and ability to work in professional teams.

Assessment method

Assessment methods are varied and designed to reflect both academic and industry practices. These include:

Written coursework and technical reports

Group work and presentations

A large-scale final project

A viva (oral assessment)

Examinations covering theoretical and applied knowledge

You’ll also be assessed on your ability to use engineering software, analyse real-world data, and present findings professionally.

Professional bodies

Professionally accredited courses provide industry-wide recognition of the quality of your qualification.
