Modules

Please download the Course Specification for a complete overview of BA Digital Film Practice modules. Find below an overview of the key learning themes that this course will cover.

Level 4:
At Level 4, you will complete six modules designed to give all students a professional foundation in the fundamentals of storytelling and digital film production. This level gives you the broad skillsets, providing a comprehensive starting point for specialist skills in storytelling, film production, Post-Production, Visual Effects (VFX), Virtual Production (VP), and Sound Design.

In the first semester, you will develop a practical and contextual understanding of narrative film structure, learning how to turn a creative idea into a professional script. Also, get hands-on with on-set film production tools, gaining the essential skills needed to work confidently with cameras, lighting, and sound in a real-world environment. It is all about learning the rules, so confidently you can break them creatively.

In the second semester you will gain an introduction to each of the specialisms, with each module including both practical and contextual elements, concluding the year by combining these skills into a professional portfolio that demonstrates your proficiency across the entire digital film pipeline.

Level 5:
Having understood the broad skillsets at Level 4, you will spend your second year (Level 5) evolving into a multi-skilled post-production specialist. This level focuses on high-end technical proficiency, professional workflows, and creative discipline in every semester.
In the first semester, you will immerse yourself in Post-Production Practices, developing advanced knowledge and skills in fiction editing, VFX compositing, and Virtual Production (VP) pre-visualization. In parallel, you will engage in Story Structure & Style, focusing your narrative craft into an original film production while deepening your research skills and contextual understanding of global cinema.

In the second semester, you will continue to refine your craft through Post-Production Practices II, mastering non-fiction editing, narrative sound design, and advanced VFX production techniques. You will also be introduced to Professional Practice for Post-Production, where you will develop essential industry skills in asset management, quality assurance, client communications, and professional dailies/turnover workflows.

Level 6:
Building on your technical proficiency, Level 6 transitions you are being a student to thinking like a professional practitioner, focusing on high-level commercial literacy and the delivery of your final portfolio.

In the first semester, you will deploy your advanced and applied skills through Advanced Practice & Major Project Pre-Production. Working with discipline specialists, you will plan and prototype your most ambitious work yet. In parallel, the Business of Film, Television & Screen module builds your professional understanding of the industry, covering freelance setup, intellectual property, and market engagement to ensure you are career ready.

In the second semester, you will focus exclusively on the execution of your Major Graduation Project. This project allows you to showcase and launch your unique creative voice, whether through a collaborative film or an individual technical artifact. Alongside this, you will explore Themes and Trends in Digital Film Practice, refining your professional portfolio, career plans, and understanding of sustainability and emerging technologies in the modern screen landscape.
