The HND Electrical and Electronic Engineering is designed for students and professionals seeking to develop higher‑level technical skills and knowledge in electrical and electronic engineering. The programme builds on core engineering principles and focuses on electrical systems, electronic circuits, automation, control, and professional engineering practice, preparing learners for roles across a wide range of industries.

At Level 4, students develop essential engineering knowledge through engineering mathematics, engineering science, and electrical and electronic principles, forming a strong foundation in circuit laws and semiconductor theory. Practical skills are developed through Design & Project, allowing students to apply knowledge in real‑world engineering contexts.

Technical modules include Electrical Machines, which explores the construction and operation of transformers, motors, generators, and actuators, and Electronic Circuits and Devices, focusing on circuit analysis, amplifiers, oscillators, and circuit testing. This level prepares students for junior technical roles or progression to Level 5 study.

At Level 5, students extend their technical and analytical skills to meet industry‑level expectations. A major Research Project enables independent investigation and problem‑solving, supported by Further Mathematics to strengthen analytical capability.

Specialist modules include Embedded Microprocessor Systems, Analogue Electronic Circuits, and Digital Electronic Circuits, developing competence in electronic system design, instrumentation, control, and integrated devices. Professional Engineering and Sustainability ensure students understand professional practice, ethical responsibility, and low‑carbon engineering principles.

Delivered with employer input and aligned to industry needs, the programme provides a clear pathway to degree‑level study or professional registration, supporting progression into senior technical, supervisory, or professional engineering roles.

Research Project – This module enables students to independently deliver a complex engineering research project while applying critical thinking, communicating effectively, and developing key analytical, creative, and collaborative skills.
Professional Engineering – This module teaches students the key professional standards and skills required of engineers—covering strategy, sustainability, management, and professional practice—so they can produce effective service delivery plans and demonstrate responsibility to society, the profession, and the environment.
Further Mathematics – This module trains students to use key mathematical methods—such as number theory, matrices, numerical techniques, and differential equations—to analyse and solve engineering problems.
Sustainability – On successful completion of this module the student with possess a wide range of knowledge and understanding of the issues and topics associated with sustainability and low carbon engineering.
Embedded microprocessor systems – This module aims to give students a solid understanding of microprocessor‑based systems and their role in instrumentation and control, provide hands‑on experience in developing microprocessor solutions to real engineering problems, and develop the ability to critically evaluate different microprocessors and their suitability for specific engineering applications.
Analogue electronic circuits – This module develops students’ understanding of analogue electronic systems by exploring specialised applications of analogue devices, using ECAD tools to design, build, and test circuits, and enabling them to explain how analogue and digital subsystems operate and how information is processed within complete electronic systems.
Digital electronic circuits – The module is designed to build on students current understanding of digital eletronics and mathematical techniques such as boolean algebra for circuit design and reduction learners are introduced to medium and large scale integrated devices.

Engineering Science – understanding the principles underpinning engineering.

Electrical Machines - This module covers the principles, construction, and key operating characteristics of electromagnetic machines such as transformers, motors, generators, actuators, and transducers.

Electronic circuits and devices - This module introduces the use of manufacturers’ data to analyse electronic circuits and devices, covering amplifier operation, feedback types, oscillators, and testing procedures to evaluate circuit performance.

Electrical and Electronic Principles - This module covers the fundamental principles of electricity and semiconductor theory, introducing basic circuit laws, key components such as diodes and transistors, and the operation of simple amplifiers and logic‑gate circuits.

Assessment method
