Course Overview

Do you want to create visual art for games? Develop innovative concept art for all aspects of games? Our BA (Hons) Games Art degree gives you a hands-on experience - you will design everything from characters to props, environments to whole worlds.

Covering all aspects of 2D and 3D art delivered our course is delivered by staff with current industry practice and experience. The Games Art team include professionals who currently work in the Games industry. We maintain close ties with professionals in this extensive and expanding creative industry many of which are previous alumni of our sister course Games Design. We lean on this wealth of experience to provide insight that will allow you to transition seamlessly from degree to industry employment.

You will work in a dedicated studio, using industry focused briefs, working to real deadlines, all while getting the chance to express your own creative ideas through your project work. As your skills develop you will undertake live briefs linked to practicing games artists. You will also have the opportunity to undertake structured work experience during your studies.

What you'll do

  • You will have the opportunity to work on live projects linked to industry artists, providing a much-needed edge to your portfolio and CV.

  • You are encouraged to have creative freedom as an artist, but you will also be learning necessary industry focused skills using our dedicated studio and industry standard techniques and equipment.

  • We have an established visiting Industry Speaker programme. We host talks from 3D Artists, Concept Artists, Technical Artists, Designers, Production and QA to name a few. Our speakers come from both AAA and independent game development studios.

The UK games industry is one of the largest areas of the creative sector and we have seen significant expansion in our own North West regional economy. The Game Art course is uniquely positioned to take advantage of this by helping you create a cutting-edge portfolio which will open up exciting career opportunities within the games industry.

There are many roles for artists in developing games. It starts with initial concept art, idea and world development, generating the look and feel of a game. Beyond that is the digital application of 2D and 3D art in games creating props, characters and environments that are key to games.

Our graduates will enjoy careers as concept artists, 3D artists, technical artist, VFX artists, UI/UX artists, marketing artists and many more specific art roles.

Graduates from our course will be ready for the many and varied career paths in the games industry.
