The BSc [Hons] Medical Bioscience programme includes many industry-relevant practical lessons and skills developed in scientific and clinical settings. These support learners in developing practical skills required for various roles within the sector.

Theoretical content supports practical lessons and covers a wide range of topics within medical bioscience, which provides students with underlying knowledge in key areas and helps inform career and/or further study choices.

The BSc [Hons] Medical Bioscience programme includes a variety of modules that reflect different areas of the Medical Bioscience sector. This will allow students to develop an awareness of potential career opportunities and the underpinning knowledge. Practical lessons will be delivered at NLC STEM Campus in the purpose-built (HE) STEM laboratories.

Emerging fields pertinent to medical bioscience are embedded throughout the BSc [Hons] Medical Bioscience programme, ensuring students have the knowledge and skills to give them a competitive edge in a challenging economic climate. By covering emerging fields, students will leave the programme with the most current and up-to-date knowledge that will not only be a benefit should they wish to undertake further educational study but also if they choose to enter employment, then they will be equipped with an understanding of and practical experience within the most current and emerging areas within this field. This attractive prospect has been identified as an essential factor by employers.

If you wish to continue studying beyond this course, it will provide you with a strong academic basis. After completing the BSc in Medical Bioscience, learners could progress onto the following Master’s degrees: MSc Translational Oncology [University of Sheffield], MSc Biomedical Sciences [University of Hull], MSc Pharmacology, and MSc One Health [University of Lincoln].

Modules

Course Modules

The programme is offered on a full-time (FT) or part-time (PT) basis. During term time, full-time students are required to attend two days per week, while part-time students attend one day per week. This amounts to approximately seven hours (PT) to 13 hours (FT) of scheduled activities, including lectures, lab sessions, and tutorials. All timetabled sessions are conducted in person on-site at UCNL or at our dedicated science laboratories at NLC, although some sessions may be delivered using a blended approach.

Students are expected to carry out self-directed study outside scheduled timetabled sessions. Study resources and guides will be supplied through the programme’s Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), including complete reading lists, library and online resources, and links to useful academic tools. Assignments are submitted via the VLE, and students can expect to receive feedback within 20 working days of submission.

Students will be assigned a supervisor to support their Scientific Research Paper. They are expected to meet regularly with their supervisors, including outside timetabled sessions.

All modules on the BSc Medical Bioscience (Top-up) are mandatory, and each is valued at 20 Credits.

  • Pharmacology (20 credits)

240 credits from a FdSc Bioscience/Biochemistry/Medical Bioscience or a FdSc Science-related subject.
