Course summary

Summary

Great cities are shaped by both engineering and design. Civil engineering with architecture brings these disciplines together, combining technical knowledge with creative thinking to design sustainable, liveable urban spaces.

On this course, you will explore how structures and cities are planned, designed and built. You will develop the skills needed for a career in structural engineering design, specialising in architecture and urban design alongside structural and geomechanical engineering.

In your first two years, you will build a strong foundation in engineering science and civil engineering principles. Through workshops and design projects, you will develop practical skills in sketching, model making and computing.

In your third year, you will focus on civil engineering within an urban design context, deepening your understanding of structures and geotechnics. In your final year, you will apply architectural principles through design projects, while exploring project economics and management.

You can also choose to take an Industrial Placement Year, extending your degree and giving you the opportunity to gain experience as a trainee engineer in a professional environment.

Course Modules

Year 1: An Introduction to Engineering Design; Civil Engineering fundamentals; Mathematics for Engineering and the Environment I; ThermoFluids; Mechanics, Structures and Materials.

Year 2: Liveable Cities; Structural Analysis; Mathematics for Engineering and the Environment II; Structural Design; City Infrastructure Design Project; Soil Mechanics; Hydraulics; Numerical Methods.

Year 3: Architecture 3, Individual Project, Structural Stability and Finite Element Analysis, Geotechnical Engineering, Urban Design.

Year 4: Architectural Group Design Project, Project Economics and Management, Architectural Engineering Project plus additional advanced module options.

Assessment method

Assessment is conducted through a combination of unseen written examinations and assessed coursework in the form of problem solving exercises, laboratory reports, design projects, essays, and individual and group projects. Experimental, research and design skills are assessed through laboratory reports, coursework exercises, dissertations and oral presentations.

The Industrial Placement Year is assessed via an individual reflective report.
