Summary

Chemical engineering is about designing the processes that power a more sustainable future. From clean energy to advanced materials, it plays a vital role in tackling global challenges.

On this integrated master’s course with an additional year in industry, you will develop advanced skills in sustainable chemical engineering. You will learn how to design and optimise processes, combining chemistry and engineering to create solutions that have real impact.

Your year in industry gives you the opportunity to apply your knowledge in a professional setting, building experience and confidence while gaining insight into how the sector works.

You will study across both Engineering and Chemistry, developing a deeper understanding of the science behind problems and the ability to engineer innovative responses. Your learning builds towards a major design project, where you will apply your knowledge to solve a complex, real world challenge.

Course Modules

Year 1: Study the principles of chemical engineering, as well as modules in engineering and chemistry covering topics such as design, mechanics, and thermofluids.

Year 2: Deepen your knowledge of chemical engineering by studying core topics including process control, reaction engineering, and heat and mass transfer.

Year 3: Study advanced chemical engineering modules such as advanced reaction engineering and complete your group design project.

Year 4: Complete your industrial placement year

Year 5: Carry out an individual research project, learn about the commercialisation of chemistry and choose optional modules in areas such as bioenergy, and wastewater treatment.

Assessment method

Testing is conducted through a combination of unseen written examinations and assessed coursework in the form of problem-solving exercises, laboratory reports, design exercises, essays, and individual and group projects. Experimental, research and design skills are assessed through laboratory reports, coursework exercises, oral presentations and oral examinations.

We normally consider applicants who offer at least 1 Advanced Higher. Applicants presenting with only Highers will be considered on a case by case basis. Where Highers are taken over two years it might be expected that higher grades are achieved, particularly in any specific subjects required. For example, S5 – S6 (2 years): AABBB (A in specific subject) or S6 (1 year): ABBBB (A in specific subject).

Offers will be based on exams being taken at the end of S6. Subjects taken and qualifications achieved in S5 will be reviewed. Careful consideration will be given to an individual’s academic achievement, taking in to account the context and circumstances of their pre-university education.
