Course summary

Our Geopolitics, Resources and Territory MA is a unique multidisciplinary programme that focuses on the territorial and resource-related aspects of inter-state relations. The programme replaces and expands upon our long-established and highly successful Geopolitics, Territory and Security MA (1997‒2020) to critically examine resource contestation in addition to disputes over borders and territory. You will explore geopolitical and political geographic analysis contextualised within the wider social sciences, and the relevant aspects of international law.

These approaches will be examined in the context of topical issues such as water conflicts, to understand the creation and maintenance of international boundaries, borders at various scales and the factors driving contemporary territorial disputes including those relating to the use of scarce natural resources.

Key benefits

  • Gain deeper understanding of the theoretical and historical foundation in the principal study concepts relating to territory, natural resources and international boundaries with access to international (legal and technical) experts, policy experts as well as recognised scholars.

  • Learn about cutting-edge debates and policy solutions on natural resources disputes such as water and natural resources.

  • Have access to the extensive vast collection of resources in London for researching historical and contemporary aspects of international boundary questions and territorial disputes. Students are encouraged to take advantage of excellent access to the National Archives and British Library.

  • Opportunities to explore a range of regional geopolitical issues guided by academic experts; as a student you are granted considerable autonomy in developing the focus of your coursework, including your dissertation.
