Course summary
From start to finish producers are the driving force behind the film and television industry. They generate new projects and ideas, secure finance, manage production and strategically market the result. The producer’s role has been transformed by the advent of globalisation, digital technology and the multi-channel environment. Now more than ever, the entertainment industries need creative leadership.
Our Masters offers aspiring producers the opportunity to acquire the creative and entrepreneurial skills required to enter the rapidly changing universe of film and television. You will learn to create script ideas, work with writers and directors, manage a production thoroughly and market across platforms, we'll teach you how to navigate the financial and legal aspects of the industry, too.
The course is taught from our creative hub at Royal Holloway's Central London campus in Senate House and 11 Bedford Square. Our proximity to the media industries means that we can draw upon professionals for outstanding master classes, industry panels and careers events. Students are also encouraged to attend the Film Festivals in London, Berlin and Cannes and to attend Industry Forums such as Series Mania in Lille.
You will learn from top talent and have the opportunity to make short form content, with technical training and locations provided on the Egham Campus. 'The Role of the Producer' and 'Script Development' modules are taught by prolific film producer, Sheryl Crown and 'International Media Business' is taught by Professor David Thompson, one of the UK's most respected and experienced drama producers, having previously worked as Head of BBC Films. The Course Leader and Associate Professor is Linda James, an award-winning producer and TV highly successful entrepreneur who teaches 'Producing Workshop".
Through the carefully curated taught modules, students are provided with opportunities to network with international talent and expertise, as well as building links with current Royal Holloway students and academic partners.

Assessment method
Assessment is carried out by a variety of methods including essays, script reports, treatments, pitching exercises, studio exercises, production papers, business reports and presentations.

UK Honours degree or equivalent
Normally we require a UK 2:1 (Honours) or equivalent in relevant subjects but we will consider a high 2:2 or relevant work experience. Candidates with professional qualifications in an associated area may be considered. Where a ‘high 2:2’ is considered, we would normally define this as reflecting a profile of 57% or above.
Applicants with relevant professional qualifications or creative experience in the Media will also be considered.
Applicants may be interviewed.

Additional fee information
These tuition fees apply to students enrolled on a full-time basis in the academic year 2026/27. Students studying on the standard part-time course structure over two years are charged 50% of the full-time applicable fee for each study year.
Royal Holloway reserves the right to increase all postgraduate tuition fees annually, based on the UK’s Retail Price Index (RPI). Please therefore be aware that tuition fees can rise during your degree (if longer than one year’s duration), and that this also means that the overall cost of studying the course part-time will be slightly higher than studying it full-time in one year.
