Course overview
Our MA in Translation and Interpreting is a uniquely specialised course that builds the skills and experience in specialised translation studies, with a strong focus on interpreting within a range of settings and modes.
And with Swansea University being a former member of the European Master’s in Translation Network (EMT), and our courses complying with the Bologna pattern of Higher Education, you can be confident that your studies are reputable and focussed on employability.
Throughout your studies you will benefit from a high level of flexibility, with our courses available both full-time and part-time, as well as the option to complete the 2 year extended programme in 15 months.
If you choose to study the 2-year extended degree, you will also benefit from specialisation credits, which can be taken as further study at Swansea University, or through completing a semester abroad at one of our partner institutions.
For those who are native or near-native in both English and French, we also offer a Double MA in Specialised Translation with Université Grenoble-Alpes (UGA) in France.

Your MA Translation and Interpreting Experience
Throughout your studies you will undertake specialised work on a range of topics, such as the theory and practice of interpreting, including conference interpreting and simultaneous interpreting.
You will train in industry-standard technologies within our dedicated Translation Labs, such as computer-assisted translation tools, machine translation, post-editing, localisation, transcreation, information mining and AI and prompt engineering.
You will also have the opportunity to work directly with professionals, delivering industry standard translation work, and gaining experience in subtitling techniques. You will also simulate translation companies, working with local translation businesses and delivering on real commissions to professional standards, and will gain experience in subtitling techniques.

Translation and Interpreting Employment Opportunities
Our MA is focussed highly on employability skillsets, and is excellent preparation for the Chartered Institute of Linguists’ Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (DPSI) in the UK or other interpreting-specific certifications.
You will also have the opportunity to study a new language during your studies, such as Catalan, Italian or Portuguese, and can take a 12-week internship in place of a dissertation, to further your skills and employability prospects.
Our graduates excel in oral, real-time spoken translation, multiple interpreting modes, memory retention and public speaking skills, with the confidence to apply these skills in industry settings worldwide.
