Course summary

Immerse yourself in the study of the language, society, culture, politics and history of China or Japan. On our Chinese or Japanese Studies BA Honours degree, you'll develop your language skills in your chosen language and build an appreciation of different societies and cultures.

You will:

gain an in-depth insight into how culture, cinema, history, politics and society shape the countries where your chosen language is spoken
develop the knowledge and understanding you need to engage with people in their native language
have the opportunity to study Korean from Stage 2
Benefit from the flexibility of an optional Year Abroad or UK Careers Placement
Shape your degree to suit your personal and professional goals with one of three flexible options. You can choose to:

spend a year abroad in your third year to develop your language skills among native speakers and experience a different culture 
undertake a Careers Placement Year in the UK in your third year to gain valuable work experience
complete your degree in 3 years without spending time on a Year Abroad or on a Careers Placement Year
Regardless of what you choose to do, you will confirm this with us in Stage 2 after receiving guidance and support.

Grade B or 6 at GCSE in any modern foreign language or English language is required.

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (first teaching from September 2016)

Applicants offering a BTEC National Diploma will be considered on an individual basis. Evidence of study in any modern foreign language to GCSE grade B or 6 standard or a grade B or 6 in GCSE English is also required.

Access to HE Diploma
D: 30 credits M: 15 credits

A minimum of 30 level 3 credits at Distinction and 15 level 3 credits at Merit is required. Evidence of study in any modern foreign language to GCSE grade B or 6 standard or a grade B or 6 in GCSE English is also required.

Scottish Higher
AABBB

Combinations of Highers and Advanced Highers accepted, including a foreign language or English at National 5, minimum grade B (or grade 2 Standard Grade or Intermediate 2 equivalent). Where a candidate bypasses the assessment for National 5 qualifications, a minimum of grade C in the Higher in any modern foreign language or English is required.

Scottish qualifications can be taken in more than one sitting.

Extended Project

If you offer a Level 3 Extended Project Qualification, we will vary our offer to recognise this. The EPQ can be in any topic.

A foreign language or English Ordinary Level at Grade O2 is also required if not offered at Higher Level.
