BMus (Hons) Music is a four year full-time undergraduate course. Train alongside the world’s best musicians in an inspiring, collaborative environment that helps you meet the demands of a contemporary music career.
Our flagship music course takes you on an exploration of artistic development, with practical training and opportunities strongly linked to current music industries at its heart.
As part of your bespoke training, you’ll take part in individual and group lessons, performance classes and masterclasses with some of the industry’s most acclaimed performers.
During the application and audition process, you must select which instrument(s) you wish to specialise in for the duration of your course. On this course, you can choose from the following options:
For all courses, you must select at least one specialism from the 'primary' list. For those studying primary/secondary pathways, two instruments may be selected – one from the 'primary' list and one from the 'secondary' list. Joint pathway students may select any two instruments from either list.
The following entry points are available for this course:
Entry to the BMus (Hons) Music course is by audition for vocalists and instrumentalists, and by interview for composers.
As a guide to the minimum standard required for entry, we expect instrumental and vocal candidates to be able to demonstrate musical ability equivalent to that required to gain a Distinction at ABRSM Grade VIII.
Composers are required to submit examples of their creative work to discuss at interview.
Candidates who are successful at audition/interview are usually expected to gain at least two A-Levels including Music or an equivalent level 3 qualification prior to entry. Equivalent qualifications include Scottish Highers, BTEC National Diploma/Certificate, WBQ, International Baccalaureate, Advanced GNVQ, AVCE or Advanced Diploma (Level 3) and recognised international qualifications.
ABRSM music theory qualifications at Grade VI or above may also be considered as an alternative to an A-Level in Music. In any case, the minimum conditions attached to any offer of a place are based on individual applications/auditions, and will often be higher than the minimum requirements stated above.
