Course summary
Physics is the study of the fundamental forces of the Universe, understanding the nature of waves and particles, and the structure of matter.
You will develop advanced techniques for researching fundamental physics, scientific principles and methods. You'll investigate subjects like nanosystems, semiconductors, fusion plasmas, biophysics, and quantum computing. You'll learn to analyse real-life problems, write scientific reports, communicate complex concepts, and design and perform experiments. Work with world-renowned physicists with access to unique facilities like our Astrocampus and the York Plasma Institute giving you unprecedented opportunities to observe and experiment, helping you develop skills essential for higher-level research.

A level - AAA
Essential Subjects:
Physics and Mathematics (or equivalent) at grade A are essential.
Information: Applicants taking Science A Levels that include a practical component will be required to pass.
Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (first teaching from September 2016)
DDM + A at A Level Mathematics.
We consider a range of BTEC qualifications equivalent to 3 A Levels, or in combination with A Levels or other qualifications.
A Level in Mathematics (or equivalent qualification) at grade A is essential. A Level in Physics (or equivalent qualification) at grade A is also essential, but we may consider relevant units in your BTEC as A Level Physics equivalent.
Access to HE Diploma - D: 39 credits M: 6 credits
We will consider the Access to Higher Education Diploma. The syllabus must contain a significant portion of Mathematics and Physics that is considered equivalent to A Level standard. Applications will be considered on an individual basis - please contact the Department before you apply.

Welsh Baccalaureate - Advanced Skills Challenge Certificate (last awarded Summer 2024) - A
We will consider this qualification alongside or in combination with A Levels or other qualifications, as equivalent to one A Level.
Extended Project
We recognise the value of this qualification although it will not be included as a condition of entry. It may be taken in to consideration when you receive your results.

Cambridge Pre-U Physics and Mathematics at grade D3 are essential.
OCR Cambridge Technical Extended Diploma
DDM + A at A Level Mathematics.
We consider a range of OCR qualifications equivalent to 3 A Levels, or in combination with A Levels or other qualifications.
A Level in Mathematics (or equivalent qualification) at grade A is essential. A Level in Physics (or equivalent qualification) at grade A is also essential, but we may consider relevant units in your OCR as A Level Physics equivalent.
