Course summary

With over a billion learners and the market set to double to £68 billion by 2031 (Meticulous Research, May 2025), teachers of English to speakers of other languages are in high demand.
Our MSc TESOL provides an advanced education and professional qualification for those who either work in, or plan to work in any areas of TESOL. Its balance of theory, practice and research will help you to become a confident, critically reflective and enterprising teacher.
On this TESOL Masters you’ll:

  • gain a solid grounding in applied linguistics and teaching methodology, including the use of technology;

  • learn from professionals who have experience of living and teaching all over the world;

  • undertake micro teaching sessions by creating and teaching lessons you’ve designed for learners of different proficiency levels and ages;

  • reflect on your teaching practice in discussion with fellow students and the teaching team;

  • implement new teaching methods informed by research evidence;

  • use qualitative and quantitative research methods to conduct a small-scale research project.
    The content of the course will vary to suit your teaching experience.

Develop your teaching skills with a placement
You can choose to engage with three types of placement opportunities to apply the teaching skills and theories learned during your studies:
Local placement
An eight-week extra-curricular experience in a UK institution. You can observe and potentially teach English as a second language alongside your studies.
International placement
We have strong partnerships with institutions across the world. These placements range in duration and content depending on the arrangements with the partners. Typically they last between four and eight weeks. Previous students on the course have completed placements with organisations that include:

  • Next-Level Solutions, France

  • Iwate University, Japan

  • Zurich University of Teacher Education / PHZH, Switzerland

  • Leuphana University of Lüneburg, Germany

Self-sourced Teaching Portfolio placement
You can choose between a research-based dissertation and a practice-based Teaching Portfolio. You would complete in a self-sourced teaching setting that reflects your professional interests.
Choose your ideal TESOL pathway
You can work towards our core TESOL Masters degree or opt to specialise in one of the following pathways of study:

  • MSc TESOL and Applied Linguistics

  • MSc TESOL and Computer Assisted Language Learning

Committed to enhancing your employability
As part of our Masters in TESOL, you’ll have access to the first-class range of services offered by our Career Development Centre. We also run a tailored workshop series “My Career in TESOL”, which aim to develop:

  • your knowledge of job market requirements;

  • your confidence in applying for jobs.
