Course summary

Make a difference to the lives of young people through physical education and school sport. Build the skills for a rewarding career, inspiring children to be more active, and improving their health and wellbeing through sport.

Immerse yourself in a vibrant campus brimming with sports activities, and make the most of our purpose built outdoor classroom and brand-new £8.8m sports academy facilities. Benefit from our partnerships with local organisations, including schools, sports clubs, and national bodies and experience supporting sporting events.

Alongside your studies, you’ll have the opportunity to enhance your CV with additional qualifications such as the LTA teacher training award, Level 1 certificate in coaching rounders and FA secondary school teachers award. You’ll develop your teaching skills in a range of learning environments such as the swimming pool and outdoor classroom.

This course is perfect for aspiring PE teachers and those who wish to work with young people to develop their health, wellbeing and physical literacy.

Modules

Our modules are developed regularly to reflect student and industry demands, ensuring you’re well prepared to enter skilled employment on graduation. The majority of courses are comprised of both compulsory and optional modules, the latter of which you'll be able to choose from to suit your interests and career goals. Most courses also include work placement learning, to help you gain essential experience for your future.

Modules include: Coaching and teaching portfolio, Introduction to exercise physiology, Introduction to sport and exercise psychology, Principles of strength and conditioning, Academic skills for sport and exercise scientists, Research and data skills in sport, Introduction to the Sports and Education Industries, Coaching children, Pedagogy in action, School sports development, Developing the professional profile, The sport and exercise scientist, The sport and exercise researcher, Professional development in sport, Advancing the professional profile and Sport research project.

Qualification requirements

UCAS Tariff - 120 points

120 UCAS tariff points, to include Biology, Sport or PE.

A level - BBB

BBB or equivalent from at least two full A Levels. This must include Biology, Sport or PE at grade D or above.

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma (first teaching from September 2016) - DDM

DDM in an Extended Diploma in a relevant subject.

Access to HE Diploma

120 UCAS tariff points in an Access to Higher Education Diploma. This must include nine level 3 credits at Merit or above in Biology.

Scottish Higher

120 UCAS tariff points from at least two Highers, to include Biology, Sport or PE at C or above. You must have completed two years study at Higher Level.

International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme

120 UCAS tariff points in an IB Diploma, from at least two Highers at H4 or above. This must include Biology or Sport.

Leaving Certificate - Higher Level (Ireland) (first awarded in 2017)

120 UCAS tariff points from at least two Highers, to include Biology, Sport or PE at H3 or above.

T Level

An overall grade of Distinction, to include grade B or above in the Core component in a Science subject. T Level subjects considered are Animal Care and Management (Science Pathway), Healthcare Science and Science. Health will be considered on an individual basis.

In addition to the above, we require a minimum of five GCSEs at grade 9-4 (A*-C), to include English and Maths. We will consider equivalencies including but not limited to functional skills level 2, Irish Ordinary level, National 5s, IB standard level.

We will consider combinations of level three qualifications.

We welcome applications from individuals with equivalent, non-UK qualifications and mature students (over 21). We may interview as part of the application process.

The minimum academic entry requirement for this programme is 96 UCAS tariff points, providing this is combined with relevant experience.
